I'll be interested to hear what you get. It looks like a case into which you can fit a Compact Flash card or a 1" micro drive - and I assume a 4GB Compact Flash card is included.Stompa0 -

Oh well, i't still cheap but not as reliable or robust as solid state I guess.

4GB Drive from MicroDirect
This device is listed as being about "as big as the base of a coffee mug". So as a portable "thumb drive" is is not a good idea...
However, for the avid photographers amongst you, this might be an excellent device!!!
It has a 4GB Microdrive hard disk inside it, which can slide in and out. If you camera supports a 4GB microdrive (which is similar in format and style to a Compact Flash), then you can use the microdrive as a 4GB camera card.
It is important you check that your camera can support microdrive at all.
If it supports MicroDrive it will list it in the manual (or the manufacturers website might tell you). The most likely suitable cameras are Digital SLR's where the file sizes demand large storage devices and therefore are more likely to have built-in support for this model.
Then you need to check if it can support a 4GB microdrive (some will only support up to 2GB!) So double check if it can read this 4Gb model.
Note: Some models of camera will only support over 2GB after a downloading and installing a firmware update.
At this price, this is a phenominal upgrade for your camera.
You can then use the USB part as a compact flash & microdrive reader for uploading your photos to your computer when you get home.
Hope this helps someone.
Mike
(disclaimer: I haven't tried this myself, so don't blame me if it doesn't work. Reading the specs suggests that it should work, but I haven't tried it!)

and now in laymen terms pls
Most of the devices listed in this thread are Solid State, which means that it is purely electronic (eg Flash Memory). These devices use memory chips which don't need any power to store the information, so will remember anything when unplugged and are virtually indestructable. (Seen videos of people driving 4x4's over them etc and they still worked... but don't try this at home!)
However, the 4GB drive from MicroDirect (and probably the one from Savacentre too - but not confirmed yet) is actually a very small (1 inch!) hard disk, so isn't solid state (like the rest of the thumb drives in this article). That means that it probably consumes more power, but more importantly in this case, could be damaged by knocking it when it is use, (hence the comments that it has "mechanical moving parts" inside). Basically these are more fragile and physically larger units than the flash memory based (solid state) devices.
The big plus aspect here though, is the amazing price, and the fact that the drive is removable from the USB reader/writer, so you can use it in your camera if you camera is compatible (see my last comment on this thread for more info).
Hope this explains the difference to you.

Is this the dodgy microstore HD or another more reliable brand of drive?
Cheers
EDIT: Am thinking of trying it in my Dell X50v PDA or Canon Ixus 500; although I don't think the Ixus suppports cards of that size.EGG are a bunch of complete bankers!0 -

The best place I have found for any type of memory is http://www.mymemory.co.uk/ it is based in jersey and so is able to offer lower prices.
And the good news is it has a chart to tell you what memory your phone/ mp3 player/ TV/ GPS/ etc uses, so you don't have to be a technical whizz to take the memory out of the machine to check what it is.

Prices look good, and I see you can get 4% discount with QuidCo.
I'm a bit puzzled about the VAT though. It looks as though only items that cost more than £18 incur any VAT. So I could order many items each costing £17.99 (in a single order), and pay no VAT. Is that correct?
(This seems at odds with somewhere like 7dayshop, where the £18 limit seems to apply 'per consignment').Stompa0 -
It has to do I think with declaring tax. As jersey and the channel islands are tax havens they can get away with different tax concessions0
