Hi minimacka
Here is a recipe for a 7" square or 8" round vanilla sponge cake. I use this all the time and it is gorgeous
200g butter
200g caster sugar
200g SR flour
4 eggs
3/4 tsp vanilla extract
preheat oven to 160 (gas mark 2-3) line the base of your tin only and grease the sides.
Beat butter and marg till light and fluffy
add eggs one at a time, beating well after each one
sift in flour and mix thoroughly
add vanilla
Pour mixture into tin and bake for approx 50mins
This makes a sponge approx 2 1/2" deep so you will need a 3" tin really. I also use an electric mixer for all the mixing:D
Models can be made anytime really, the sooner the better as they will take a day or so to dry depending on the size etc.
Not quite sure what you mean about the fondant:oFeb GC £80 per week (Well I'm gunna try:whistle:)

Hi Mininmacka
Welcome to the thread, my recipe is similar to stardrops so I wont post that twice :rotfl:With the icing are you using butter cream? If you are you can apply it with a spatula and I use a smoothing tool which you can buy at any craft shop or online. This will help you get a smooth surface, if I want a really smooooth surface I place a piece of kitchen paper on the icing after I have used the smoothing tool and place my hand gently on the paper and rub this will bring out any other lumps and bumps. To stick the pieces of cake together you can use a little of your butter cream to sandwich them together.

Thanks awsome, the icing is the ready to roll red fondant icing so when i roll it i will have to put it over the cake which i will of covered first in buttercream so that it will stick . Because its a van shape i will have to mould the rolled out fondant over the hood, bonnet so i will have to cut the icing and i wondered how easy it was to blend it together.

Hi
If you have a large enough quantity you could roll it out big enough to go over the whole cake in one go and trim aroung the outline of the van. If this is not possible it will mould together you would need to press the joins together and try to smooth them out so as you cannot see the joins

OK, so my edible lustre spray has now arrived, and I have all the bits and pieces ready to start. Shame I can't get some practice in. I know it says edible on the outside but I am a little dubious about eating paint
I shall have to get over that one, I think! I can't start it until mid-November as it's my birthday cake, but I shall enjoy it all the more when the time comes! In the meantime I'm practicing my rolling techniques and such with blue-tack.

Hi Everyone, there are some truly fabulous cakes on here, I am in awe of you all!
My Granny recently gave me a selection of the rubber baking moulds, she actually gave me a few, ranging from the individual cupcake size to a loaf shaped one and a few others I think - I'll need to check the shapes/sizes because I am ashamed to say they have been sat in the cupboard ever since!
Now I have never baked any cakes in my life and I think this was my Granny hinting for me to start! Can any of you ladies please recommend really simple impossible-to-go-wrong recipes for me to try?
Also I remember baking with my Granny years ago but that was using the good old metal tins and I don't know where to start with silicon ones, how do you prep them?VSP - £14.76 | Saving for a Deposit0 -
Whilst I have can bake a nice fluffy cake I have never attempted any kind of icing. Where is the best place to begin?0
