Thanks pointofnoreturn
They took about an hour and 20 - 30 minutes - I'm paranoid about undercooking them so I'd rather have them burnt a bit than undercooked - that's with a maderia sponge - 315g self raising, 185g plain flour, 315g butter (i use trex), 6 eggs and 2 tsp of vanilla exctract (i think thats the right mixture - if not - thats a rough guide) My first cake was a bit of a nightmare - i thought that silicone cases didn't need to be greased - doh!!!
My idea for my mario cake was lifted off a cake I'd seen on here mixed with a few googled images - I was really impressed - it took me about 3 hours to make all the figures, in between the X Factor and then an hour to ice, cover and arrange the figures. That's probably my quickest ever cake to make0 -
Those look ace Fletty and fairly easy to make0

Well your figures look great and I love the colours as well - I bet it was well received??? I think I might get the giant cupcake mould when I get home from the US in a few weeks. I bought a Wilton Cupcake Decorating set last week with 4 different nozzles and some icing bags in it so they will come in handy!!!The E-mail of the species is more deadly than the mail.0 -
I didnt see the boy's face who's cake it was but his dad (my next door but 1 neighbour) loved it and asked me to do his daughters cake in December (that was before he had even tasted it) I need to improve on my piping skills - did you buy a piping bag or just the nozzles - i have a resuable piping bag and hate washing it - I'm looking for the cheapest place to get disposable bags0

Stokegal, can I just ask how you iced the top half of your giant cup cakes, did you pipe it on? All the cakes look fab.0

Thanks Thrifty - I did pipe the top of the cake but there actually isnt much buttercream on it because of the shape of the cake... I'm not explaining this very well....

This is the shape of the cupcake - the buttercream is only a thin layer on top of it as the shape comes from the cake - does that explain it any better - sorry!0 -

Look forward to seeing your pics.
Hi pointofnoreturn, sorry for taking ages to reply to you! Yes is was a silicon mould that I used. I used a 6oz mix for the base and a 4oz mix for the top. I greased the moulds and put them in the oven together for about 30 mins on 180c and then about 40 mins on 160c.
The base was perfect, couldn't have been better, but the top, its still a bit hit and miss. Once the cream was on there it made it fall apart, I'm thinking that maybe I need to do maybe a 3oz cake mix but put 4oz flour in to make it a bit thicker?? Or maybe ice the whole thing once its put together??
I'm in the process of uploading the photos as I speakYou're so very special, I wish I was special :dance:0 -

It was really well received. My whole office stopped dead, it went really quiet, then all you could hear was "What's that??" " Oh Wow thats amazing" and such like. People were taking photos of it on their mobiles and posing with it, it was fantastic!! :rotfl:You're so very special, I wish I was special :dance:0 -
