    Hi
I have just got my giant cupcake mould and wondered if anyone could help regarding the icing. I have no idea what to use to ice it. Can someone give me a clue what they have used.

i have just ordered one of those i think i am going to use a buttercream for mine i think it stays in place better than an icing does :o xxx
  • I have been really inspired by this thread. DS caught me looking through some party cakes books at the local library (there is a parents shelf in the childrens section) and decided he wanted he red nee-nor cake for his third birthday. Using the book and a toy fire engine for inspiration, I came up with this

    http://tamstersshowtell.blogspot.com/2010/09/my-little-man-is-3.html

I would never have glanced at a party cakes book if I hadnt been lurking on this thread lol!
  • Also in the book I borrowed from the library (sorry I never made a note of the Author or title) was an idea for making cup cakes in those flat bottomed ice-cream cones and then piping buttercream to look like a Mr Whippy ice-cream complete with a flake!

The recipe was your usual sponge, you just put it into the cones, then stand the cones in a muffin tray to stop them falling over in the oven.

Would love to give it a try but it ends up being me that eats them!

Thank you so much. The waterfall is just rolled out coloured icing with blue and white coulered water icing dotted on here and there the rocks along the river are crushed oreo's, the other rocks are ready to roll icing coloured with black and a little blue food colouring.

The volcano is ricekrispie cake moulded in a bowl and then covered in chocolate with coloured icing dribbled down it and the shooting flames are melted hard boiled sweets (done in the microwave be carefull VERY hot) spooned on some teflon non stick sheet and quickly pulled along to make the shape and then left to set.

Oh wow - that swimming cake is AMAZING - how did you do the water effect? My fondant/sugarpaste/icing (whatever you want to call it) always has a matt effect asthe icing sugar I use to keep it from sticking always sticks on there and I've tried everything to make it look properly finished but am struggling - is there some secret out there that I'm not aware of? :)

    Cornflour brushes off better.

the turrets are made with fondant icing and Tylo (sp) powder wrapped round kitchen towel tubes (tubes wrapped in cling film), left to dry for a few days then normal ice cream cones for tops, then just assembling. HTH
