  • Hi

This was made about 3 weeks ago for my nieces little boy. I have to admit the football took some figuring out!! After alot of discussion with my OH and sister we realised that the black shape is a pentagon and the white is a hexagon (sounds simple but I thought it was all hexagons at first:o) I started at the top of the ball with a black pentagon and then just filled the rest in like a jigsaw I didn't really work out how many I needed beforehand, OH made me the templates out of cardboard. I laid the template on the fondant and cut round them with a knife. I just kept cutting them out until I had enough to cover the ball, does that make sense:o

Yes it does thanks did your do it in rows a black at the top then a white row then alternate black and white? Was thinking of getting a football cake tin but then decided against it because if I covered it with buttercream to make the icing stick when I wouldn't be able to follow the pattern anyway so it seemed a waste of money.

My kids made this one for my birthday. They are only 8 and 6 (the 2yo stuck the balls on, hence the indents!). I had to do the oven bit though and help a bit with the weighing etc. And I had to do the cleaning up....

But it was the thought that counts!
Ah bless them they did really well :T

I think I looked at a picture of a football for the pattern but just use my cake as a guide if you want to have a go;) I wouldn't waste money on a tin, I used a pyrex bowl I already had for the ball :D

  • The cakes on here are fantastic.

Sethsgran, your wedding cake is my idea of heaven! How did you make the domes?

Stardrops, your cakes are beautiful, so professional looking.
  • Woo-hoo the last cake until October. hubby made the sponge - he literally followed the recipe and instructions to the letter, bless. I iced it with my fave roll out icing, we traced the australia with a cocktail stick from a printout from the internet and tore away the edges. The flaming galah (parrot), triangle shark fin, kangaroo and koala were just make as usual by fashioning figures (play-do style) out of old scraps of coloured roll out icing and left in the garage dusted in cornflour to dry out & harden up over the weekend.

The giant jelly tarantulas were from sainsbury's pick & mix, and the gelly snakes were just a 59p bag of wiggly worms from their own brand 3 for £1 sweets.

Its called a Pinata cake. I have a stainless steel salad bowl which I lightly greased the inside with veg oil, tiny ammount of oil. I then put the bowl in the freezer for about an hour. When I was ready I melted approx 1lb white choc, per dome. I took the bowl out and poured about 25% of the choc in the bowl. Working quickly with my silicone pastry brush I coated the inside of the bowl. I then refroze it, not as long now. About every 20 min I took the bowl out and added another layer of chocolate. You need to make sure you get plenty of chocolate at the top of the bowl as it does drain down naturally. When I had finished I left it in the freezer to make sure it is totally frozen. My bowl has no lip round the edge which I like. I gently slip a sharp knife around the rim of the shell then whilst still really cold flip the bowl over your cake, cake needs to be on a board/plate or cake stand prior to this. My 3rd came out the best it instantly dropped onto the board. I made 1 last year for my sons birthday using milk choc and lots of 1p type seets underneath. As he likes Skittles I dipped the base of them in melted choc and stuck them all over the dome. I also heated a knitting needle and melted a hole in the top of his for a birthday candle, he was 28!!

Just found this link for a better description than mine http://adashofflavour.blogspot.com/2010/03/party-pinata-cake.html
