I've been asked to make a birthday cake (don't know why) and wondered if it would be better to make it in two sandwich tins or one deep tin? I have a deep 8" tin i could use - will it cook the same if i just use a normal basic victoria sponge recipe as it would in sandwich tins?

Everybody's cakes look fab - hope mine turns out half as good!

a victoria sponge mix doesnt cook that great in a deep tin, as you have to turn the heat down, which then stops it rising so much, or it burns around the edge - if you only have a deep tin, i would recommend making a maderia cake instead

2 x 1" deep sandwich tins would be the best thing to use tho (if you are planning on doing a filled cake

so, after doing cakes for work for fun, I've finally got 2 orders coming up in the next week. 4 dozen cupcakes for a retirement from work on Friday and a giant cupcake for a birthday next tuesday!! Soooooo panicky now!! Hope they turn out ok!! Am charging £10 for the giant cupcake and £15 for the cupcakes. I know I'm probably undercharging but dont want to over do it for the first few. If anyone has any pointers I would appreciate it :)

So, after posting this a couple of days ago, I've made my cupcakes today, ended up with 2 dozen vanilla, 2 dozen lemon and 2 dozen of the chocolate mars bar ones (thanks nuttymummy for the splendid idea, they taste fantastic!!) I'm going to be giving at least 55/60 of them and after I have just added up the ingredients, £15 seems a little "cheap" if you know what I mean, I'm not going to be making much from it. Does £20 seem too much, or what?? Grateful if anyone has any advice on what to charge as I have no idea!!!!!!!!!!!!! Am letting the person who ordered them know how much tomorrow so its not like I'm upping the price after telling them.

ps the £10 for the giant cupcake was accepted straight away so I have no problems with that! :)

Personally I think £20 is an excellenct price and even would go to £25 as that is still an amazing price for that many cupcakes. I would tell them they are getting them at a special price so you don't feel you can't charge others more in the future iyswim.

Have a look at this website to get a guide of prices

aww thanks very much girls! :)

i agree....cupcakes should be charged at around £1 each.

I know this may seem a little steep when first starting out...but you have to add up your electric/gas, ingredients...and people always forget the cupcake cases etc! any boxes you pack them in and most of all your TIME!! xx

keeping motivated...fantasy cupcakes is about 5 minutes drive away from me!

Just wondering if you can advise me........making cupcakes for my grandsons christening and I have bought a tiny pot of The Sparkle Range Rainbow Dust in Glacier Orange which I was wanting to sprinkle on the icing. I bought it in a shop that sold cake decorating supplies and I assumed it would be okay to eat....but is it. I don't want to make anybody ill and there will be quite a lot of children there. In two minds whether to take it back as I have not broke the seal.

cherydee....no glitter is actually 'edible'...its just non toxic.....you can tap it on with a dry paintbrush and will be perfectly fine to eat...dont plaster it with it though....its not dangerous, but i suspect it doesnt actually taste nice to have a mouthful of glitter LOL

you can get 'sugar crystals' which are like glitter just large grains of it...and that IS edible xx

nuttymummy do you use these glitters on cakes ? Do you think the sugar crystals crushed down would give the same effect as the glitters ? Thanks
