Anyone making cake pops, it says you can freeze the cake balls before you need them. Don't. I froze these, and the cake texture is all mushy. Nowhere near as nice as when they're made fresh.

  • How long did you freeze them for? I always freeze mine for an hour before dipping in candy melts.
    If it ain't reduced, i don't buy it! :j

I froze the balls a week ago, as I made more than I needed. Defrosted them and dipped them today. But they don't taste cakey any more, they just taste mushy :(
They were supposed to be a present, but I don't want to give them now, as they aren't up to scratch

Hi AnnieH, I've noticed you've done some fab cake pops recently and have a couple of questions before I go making some!

What recipe do you use for your cake pops? Just a basic sponge? What straws do you use? And do you dip them in the chocolate before putting them into the cake balls. And - last one I promise - what are candy melts like to use? Are they easy enough to melt/cover the cake balls?

Sorry sorry sorry for all the questions but yours look amazing!

What do you use with regards to frosting to mix with with cake to make into balls? Buttercream?

Where do you all buy your candy melts from for cake pops? I nipped in my hobbycraft and they only had the normal chocolate ones (Thought I could just melt some chocolate for that!).. TIA :) xx

I got the idea from https://www.bakerella.com. She uses a 500g packet of cake mix and a tub of ready made frosting. This is best for the first time, til you get used to the cake:frosting ratio. Now I just make them with plain sponge and buttercream. I get Lolly sticks, bags and wire ties from Mrs_haggis on eBay. But you can use coffee stirrers instead.
Candy melts are so much easier to use to coat than chocolate. Just dip the stick in the melted candy, push halfway into the cake ball and dip the whole thing, making sure you don't leave any gaps.

Yea, I used mini cookie cutters to shape them. They are about an inch and half wide

I bought candy melts online. Hobby craft had a few colours on their website, and they're cheaper than else. Or there's a good selection here

Well I had my very first attempt at a cake using sugarpaste this weekend. There was ALOT of faults with it, thats for certain! But I was pleased with the outcome as it was at least edible! Was beyond bumpy though haha Will post pictures tomorrow :D. Also did matching cupcakes and was very pelased with these.

I will defibately be using sugar paste again :D
