So next weekend I am planning on being quite adventurous and trying my first 'real' cake! I saw a picture on the forum and I was so sure it was this thread but I cant find it. It was a square cake with little stars all over with the number written in the stars and then a wire explosion at the back with stars on too. I want to try and replicate this for my uncles birthday! I usually just make two sponges and sandwich together with whipped double cream, then pop some very sweet normal icings on top and maybe use an icing can or some cake decorations to decorate. My family love it! My auntie text me asking if I could do one for my uncles 50th birthday but I thought I will go all out and try and do a 'real' cake like all your wonderful creations! Soooo... complete novice here!

What icing is it you use? Fondant? Where would I buy this?

Are you able to put cream in the middle of the cake still or does this not go well with fondant? I dont mind putting jam and buttercream instead if needs be? I only use cream as I dont like it the other way (never used to eat birthday cake so made one i liked haha) but am not lactose intolerant so cant eat it anyway!

I only have a circular cake tin, does this make is more difficult to put the icing on?

I am going to keep it simple with white base and blue stars (Man city fan!).

And I know I need one of those plastic things to stick in the cake to then put the wire in, so off to a cake supplies shop I know of in next few days. I have a plastic star cookie cutter which is an ideal size, so will just get the blue colouring gel, wire and plastic thing from the shop.

Am going to do matching cupcakes too! (What am I letting myself in for?!) so will put some matching stars on these too.

I would use jam and buttercream in the middle as the cream might make the layers slide about too much when you are icing it. If you want the cake in white, the easiest way to do it is buy a roll of ready rolled royal icing from the supermarket and stick it on with jam. If you want it a different colour get some royal icing or sugar paste from a cake supplies shop and roll it out, not too thin though or it will split. For an 8" cake you will need around 750gm of royal icing/sugar paste.

Professional cake decorators will usually stick fondant (sugar paste) to a sponge cake by first applying a THIN layer of buttercream to the cake. It needs to be thin though or you get a very squishy cake and its impossible to get a good finish.....I speak from experience lol!

Hi guys, I've been looking through this tread and there are some amazing cakes on here!
I'm about to make a cake for my neice's 18th birthday party next Friday. I'd like to do three tiers with lots of glamour and glitz and some of those sparkly stars sticking out the top, with a stiletto shoe!

Can you give me any pointers regarding the three layers please? Like how do i get them to stay on top of each other and crucially, how on earth do I get the ready roll icing to cover each cake without gathering up?! (i made my daughter a cake a few weeks ago and the ready roll icing gathered up around the edges and spoiled it a bit)...

Where is the best place to buy all of what i need regarding the decoration?

Are there any websites you all use to help with your decorating inspiration etc?

    Many thanks in advance

    D xxxx

There are loads of cake toppers on ebay, not sure if you'd get it on time though. :)

    Hi Ladies
I need pointing in the right direction pleae. Iwould like to know where I am going wrong when I ma icing a cake.
When I sandwich it together it looks nice and even all round however when I put ready roll icing on you can see the indent on the edge where to top and bottom are put togerher. I use buttercream around the outside and spread it evenly also when the icing is on the top is ok but the sides and bumpy and if pressed its like there is air underneath. I smooth it out but the bumps are still there.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Any help will be appreciated
