Hello everyone, I have been having a noisy at everyones wonderful creations they are truley beautiful!!

I have a very novice question as I havn't done much baking in the past. It is my sons birthday tomorrow and I have spent today baking a cake and vanilla and chocolate cupcakes.

My Questions are for the cupcake topping is it best to use butter or marg? Should I use buttercream? Is there a certain recipe that is better? I've had a google but theres that main different recipes I have got myself in a dither lol

And thats more questions than I thought lol

Thanks very very much in advance.

The answer is *always* butter. Not marg.
Buttercream is very forgiving, so I'd go for that as you don't have to be precise. You need soft butter, and twice as much icing sugar as butter (not sure how many cakes you have to ice) a few drops of vanilla extract, and a drop of milk if the mixture is too stiff.

Otherwise you could roll out some fondant icing and cut circles t fit the tops of your cakes. You can slice the top of the cake off to level it out. warm some jam and spread thinly, so the icing sticks.

Good luck, and don't forget to post piccies :)

Has anyone tried using mcdonalds coffee stirrers for cake pops yet? I' interested to find out what they look like. I got some today but dont think i'll have time to make any for a while. Off down south next week, going to see hairspray in aberdeen next weekend and peter kay in glasgow weekend after. If anyones used them, let us know how they turned out please.

Thanks for the replys, i may use butter for one lot and stork for the other then taste test lol

I will see how my first creations turn out before embarrassing myself and promising pictures lol. I have pinched a cake off the internet to try and recreate as my first one so fingers crossed. I am hoping I will not have to run to the supermarket and buy one like I usually do!!!

Oh sorry another question, when i have iced with buttercream do I store in the fridge?

Thanks very much for your help

depending on how far in advance you are making the cake, i would keep it in a tupperware box in a cool, dark place

i find if i put cake in the fridge too long, the sponge goes damp (or OH eats it)

So next weekend I am planning on being quite adventurous and trying my first 'real' cake! I saw a picture on the forum and I was so sure it was this thread but I cant find it. It was a square cake with little stars all over with the number written in the stars and then a wire explosion at the back with stars on too. I want to try and replicate this for my uncles birthday! I usually just make two sponges and sandwich together with whipped double cream, then pop some very sweet normal icings on top and maybe use an icing can or some cake decorations to decorate. My family love it! My auntie text me asking if I could do one for my uncles 50th birthday but I thought I will go all out and try and do a 'real' cake like all your wonderful creations! Soooo... complete novice here!

What icing is it you use? Fondant? Where would I buy this?

Are you able to put cream in the middle of the cake still or does this not go well with fondant? I dont mind putting jam and buttercream instead if needs be? I only use cream as I dont like it the other way (never used to eat birthday cake so made one i liked haha) but am not lactose intolerant so cant eat it anyway!

I only have a circular cake tin, does this make is more difficult to put the icing on?

I am going to keep it simple with white base and blue stars (Man city fan!).

And I know I need one of those plastic things to stick in the cake to then put the wire in, so off to a cake supplies shop I know of in next few days. I have a plastic star cookie cutter which is an ideal size, so will just get the blue colouring gel, wire and plastic thing from the shop.

Am going to do matching cupcakes too! (What am I letting myself in for?!) so will put some matching stars on these too.
