Hi everyone! Loving the new cake pictures!
Was wondering if anyone had any tips for me on how to make black icing!? Ive tried making it from normal buttercream, colouring it with green first, then colouring it with a little black. That didnt work too well, so i tried making it with a chocolate buttercream because i thought the brown might be a better base than the green. But the colour didnt go deep enough. Then when i put more in it effected the flavour. I'm a bit frustrated now to say the least!!6 debts down - 1 to go: just over £1000 though, soon soon....

when i made black buttercream i used chocolate with black colouring and it never really went black just a really really dark brown, this is just with the colourings from tesco, i imagine you would get a better effect with the gel colourings or the powders0

If you want a dark colour of any kind the best thing to use is colour paste, not the liquid colours you get in supermarkets etc. I had the same problem trying to get a deep red.... I bought paste and use d a tiny bit - it worked a treat!!!
You can get the paste in various cake shops and online, and the gel paste in hobbycraft etc. They aren't cheap, but they last forever so end up being really good value for money
This shop sells in store and online, I buy all my colour paste and dusts from them and find them great: http://www.squires-shop.com/ibf/index.php?p=catalog&parent=92&pg=1

I have been using the Wilton colour gels, the concentrated ones, i never use the liquid ones that you get in the shops cos it messes with the consistancy of my buttercream! Dont mind using the liquid one for sponges, like red velvet for instance.
As for the red, i tend to find that mine stays quite pinkish, i have the 'Christmas red' in the Wilton colour gel. Not sure whether i need to be leaving it for a bit for the colour to settle?6 debts down - 1 to go: just over £1000 though, soon soon....

I have heard that you make it from chocolate butter cream, add the black gel colouring, let it settle for an hour, then add in more black. Never done it for black, just red.

Hey ladies, was wondering if you could give me some advice. I am going to make some biscuits as easter gifts instead of giving easter eggs. I tried out the cutter I bought last weekend and it works well, its in the shape of a bunny
. I have 4 or 5 different sizes of the cutter.
I am making shortbread and want to put icing on top but I am unsure of what type of icing to use?
I want it to be a little bit smaller than the shortbread so you can see some of the shortbread if you get what I mean? I was thinking I could then just buy one of the black tubes of icing in the supermarket to do the eyes and whisker details. But I am open to ideas0 -

You could use "flooding" technique. Where you use a thicker version of Royal Icing and pipe the outline, then when that has set you flood it with a runnier version.
Or you could buy fondant icing and use your cutter and stick it to the biscuits. Then pipe on the whiskers?
Here is how to do flood the cookies
