Our post office lady thinks they should fit through the slot easy for it to qualify as large letter. She said they will soon sort it at the sorting office if the postage in underpaid. I mean thats a worry on its own if the package is tight going through the slot

I don't worry at all about the sorting offices saying that an item has been mis stamped. The post office uses sticky labels which they print out so they have chosen to send it as a letter, not me. If the sorting office have a problem they would need to go back to the Post Office and ask them to rethink how they categorise items.

It is frustrating though that different POs have different rules.

.... or the same rules apply at all Post Offices and the majority of staff just don't understand them (hardly surprising:confused:).
    Wins since 2009 = £17,600

Worked out the cheapest way to send it was parcelforce 48hr! Had i have gone through royal mail then it would have been cheapest to send it special delivery at £18.50!

How heavy is your item then? Surely must be thicker than 25mm and heavy for that sort of charge and all the larger item charges have dropped quite considerably in price.
Only for weights under 1kg. If it's heavier than 1kg, it should normally be the same price as before. Essexhoney, I don't understand why you were charged so much. It could be a computer fault: I recently put a Large Letter size item on the scales, and though it showed the weight as 129g, the price came up as over £6! The post office lady realised something wasn't right, reset the machine and tried again, and it worked properly the second time, giving the price as 66p. If they have new machines or they've been reprogrammed, maybe there are gremlins in them!

This happened to me, I ended up paying almost double for all my items
I thought it was my scales at home that were wrong or I had made a mistake somewhere so I paid the higher price. But after testing them today with known weights, and from what Mild Peril has said I realise they weren’t!
Is there any way to get a refund for this discrepancy?

I'm not sure if there's a special procedure for this, but if you have a receipt specifying both weights and prices (which I think they usually do), you should be able to claim a refund from the PO which overcharged you. Failing that, you could try sending a copy of it to the same address as claim forms for missing mail (sorry don't have it handy right now) with a letter explaining what's happened and asking for a refund.

well ive reduced my bubble wrap content and using normal thin envalopes instead Jiffy bags and my items just get into the Large Letter slot which is good for some of my stock has only gone up 12p postage but i mailed something that didnt quite go through the large letter and it had gone up to £1.95 which was expensive

I've just had to queue at the main post office for 35 minutes, the queues were out the door and half way down the road. The lady in front of me had several packages and said she makes a special trip as they are much better with the large letter rules. When it was my turn no one could find a slot to measure them with as I was at the bureau de change counter, and they just said 'are these all letters' so I said yes and they took the lot.

They did all go through the slot. I wouldn't have said yes otherwise, but they were close to the limit and touched the side so would probably have been disallowed at my normal PO.

I sell on ebay and have an internet site selling childrens clothes and the PIP is an absolute nightmare, not so bad for my ebay listings as I can workout the costs before listing, (i use mailing bags, squueze the air out fully and flatten the parcel, then secure the edges with sellotape so it cant expand again) and I can also send each item out as seperate (large letters), i had a couple of sales the otherday and it was chaper to send a parcel to france airmail than it was to send a similar package within the UK! it also worked out cheaper to send 2 parcels to one address than package the items together as that way they would fit through the large letter slot

for by internet site I might have to start charging a P&P rate (currently its free delivery) but I cant work out what combinations of things people will buy so now its totally unpredicatble and impossible to factor in the prices
