experiences of new postal rates

Wish me luck I'm just off to the Post office to see what of my stock will go as a large letter and what I will have to send as a package. I have bought new bags and tried to make my items thinner but bigger, rather than small but fat (are you following this or I am confusing everyone as usual?). However, the bags keep swelling up and when they do that they don't go through the slot easily.

It's also taken me about three times as long to wrap as I've flattened everything out, rather than just bunging them in a jiffy or small silver mailing bag, so I'm not happy about that.

I've also closed my ebay shop as I realise with the extra packing time combined with the increase in postage on my best seller (which can't be made any flatter) I can't justify the £6 monthly cost plus the increase in the FVF percentage.

Heavens, at this rate I might have to get another 'real' job

  • Let us know how you get on??

I've already started tackling this here by using small Jiffy bags instead of boxes. Large letter it's classed as, and less that 25mm in thickness. They're just computer cables.

Have been costing £1 over the last few weeks.

  • the items im selling at the moment used to cost £1.90 to post 1st class(book and dvd in jiffy bag).as of today if i pack them the same that price is now £1.70 1st class.however if i pack them side by side in a polybag the price drops to 90p.so no complaints from me (apart from the 70 i prepackaged last week in jiffy bags DOH).

Visited the post office this morning, and apart from the fact it was pouring with rain, it all went remarkably smoothly, not even the slightest whiff of a teething problem.

This is probably symptomatic of the fact that hardly anyone goes to the post office to POST things... it's all passports, travel insurance, car tax etc these days
  • Not been to PO yet although I will need to, came out of hospital on Friday & have 5 items paid for which I will have to pay the new rates for but the buyer has paid the old cost, hopefully the prices won't be much different.
2025 - finally back comping after a stressful house move - send me fairy dust please
  • Just come back from the PO and its a lot more expensive for me. DVD's that used to cost me £1.29 before now cost £1.70

As for the thinner dvds that go as large letter, well maybe a few pence cheaper but to be honest I don't think any different.

My postal bill up about £5-£10, thats today only.

I have just come back from the post office and was rather suprised when they showed up cheaper than what they normally do, however they did fit through the large letter slot and i know the ones going out tomorrow wont be so im sure i will be in for a shock then if what cafenervosa is anything to go by. All the ones to go out tomorrow are box set dvds rather than single ones :(

Single DVDs are ok but its the box sets that cost a lot more. I find the ones that just won't fit through the hole the biggest problem, a massive increase. The larger box sets that are weighty and large, I don't think they cost much if any more.

The post lady allowed me some leeway, and basically as long as I could show it would pass through the large letter slot she allowed me to have it rather than argue about how much help I had given it.

I already knew that one of my items would fail, so I wasn't surprised with my larger bill for those.

I was interested though in some other people before me in the queue. One lady was getting her pension and asked for 2 x 2nd class stamps to make sure her niece's card went OK (she said she was putting the second stamp on to make sure). However when they asked her if it fitted through the slot it was too wide she she had to pay 88p 2nd class and was very unhappy.

There was also a small business guy who was arguing about his brochures. He insisted he had checked the depth and that was just about OK, but had overlooked the fact that his envelopes were a few millimetres outside the width and he wasn't allowed to send them without a large increase in costs. He was threatening to complain both to the post office, and to the supplier of the envelopes for selling 'standard' enevlopes only just too big to go as a large letter. He took his brochures back and I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't going to try a different post office.

    Soo

I wouldnt mind but all the ones that are due to be sent out over the next few days are ones that paid last week by cheque even though i had stated postal order only  They will definatly all be going 2nd class i think ;)
