Update Wed 2 June

Hopefully for most all issues have now been resolved and you all got the deal you either wanted or were promised.

This is just a quick follow up note for those still having problems, please let us know by emailing DEBORAH @ MONEYSAVINGEXPERT.COM (no spaces) and we'll see if we can push to get it sorted.

Thanks

MSE Archna

Back to the original post.....

I wanted to write a quick note about the Designer Sunglasses deal that was in the weekly email this week and on the discount vouchers page.

It was a cracking deal

This was a cracking 'one-day' deal and rightly very popular, get a £50 voucher for £17.50. To get it you needed to go via My City Deals to buy the voucher which could be spent at sunglasses-shop.

Annoyingly though, sunglasses-shop put the prices up of Raybans and Oakleys on the day - not by much - but doing that goes completely against the point of these deals. Many of you were annoyed, and when we found out we were frustrated too.

Of course, as always, as soon as we realised this we got on the case both with MCD (who I have to say seem as frustrated as we are and really good about sorting this) and sunglasses-shop. So I wanted to lay out what happened and assure you
We've got a commitment from both that no one will pay a penny more than they should've done

And just to say we always thoroughly check the terms and conditions of all the deals we include in the weekly email. The MCD terms specifically state that shops can't raise their prices with one of their deals, we'd checked this and checked the prices assiduously.

Why did this happen?

My City Deals has a contractual agreement with Sunglasses Shop to supply the deal and as part of this, it (or any other retailer it deals with) is not allowed to unreasonably change prices.

Sunglasses Shop says it has an automatic price system in place, so if demand increases and suppliers increase prices, the website will automatically update.

Official statements from MCD & Sunglasses Shop

From My City Deals

"Apologies for the great deal of confusion around the Sunglasses Shop deal. We realise that many of you are concerned about changes in price since the deal was issued. These price increases have only affected certain Ray-Ban and Oakley models. No other brands have been affected. The Sunglasses Shop will honour the original prices automatically. This means that:

- If you have already placed your order and your sunglasses have changed in price, a refund of the difference in price will automatically be issued within 7 working days of your order being shipped.

- If you have not yet made a purchase we aim that the prices will be back to their level on the day of the promotion by 9:00am on Friday 21st May (ML NOTE - we've checked and some have changed back, not all yet, we're monitoring).

Please accept our apologies for any confusion caused."

Also if you'd simply prefer a refund on your voucher email support(at)mycitydeal.co.uk

Sunglasses Shop:

“Sunglasses Shop has now reverted its prices to what they were the day you purchased your voucher. Selected Oakley and Ray-Ban Sunglasses we affected only. If you have already redeemed your voucher, within 7 working days of receiving your sunglasses we aim to refund the difference.

In response to the delivery charge of £4. This was clearly stated on My City Deal, and was also reported on Money Saving Expert prior to any vouchers being sold. It is also in the confirmation email with your voucher. How the voucher was sold is not something Sunglasses Shop had control over. If you feel you were mislead please speak to My City Deal.

Regarding the longer delivery times, again this was stated prior to buying your voucher, so please try to understand the implications of dealing with so many orders.

Please note we can not reply to forum messages so if you wish to get in touch please email support@sunglassesshop.com

We've found this as frustrating as you, My City Deals is a reputable company with weighty backing from multi-million dollar American site, Groupon, not some fly-by-night site.

Further problems?

If you have any further problems, either getting a refund in the price difference or a refund on the voucher if that's what you choose, please email deborah@moneysavingexpert dot com.

If this isn't sorted out properly within the next week for anyone - then we (MSE) will kick into action on your behalf.

For anyone who this has caused an issue to, sorry. This was an unmissable deal that we checked through in detail so we wanted to tell you about it. As sometimes happens, the companies looked like they wouldn't live up to their promise, but the bigger picture is we've thought hard to ensure that happens.

Martin

What options do we have in the case that sunglassesshop cant fulfill our order due to stock reasons? Will we be able to refund the voucher with MCD even after the 7days period as we were promised any pair of sunglasses at the store with no mention of while stocks last?

I agree. Lets see whether they handle the demand and supply the actual glasses that people have ordered.

I think we all need to sit back and wait a few days.

If the exact sunglasses I ordered, turn up within a week, I'll be satisfied.

If I get the extra £5 odd back, I'll be happy.

I don't believe the "stock levels update the prices" line (and if it is true this feature should have been suspended during the deal) but I do understand that a small business can't be expected to be perfect 24-7.

    Let's give them a chance.

EDIT: oh, and MSE- blame free in my view

strange that no one has got a dispatch email yet? i phoned to check they were in stock before i ordered them and i was told they were.
i ordered yesterday at dinner time, i was expecting a dispatch email today even though it says upto 7 days. because i ordered early on.

someone mentioned they sold 10,000 pairs with this offer??? even so not everyone will have ordered them yesterday due to work etc and the voucher is valid for a month.so they should still have posted a lot out yesterday and today.

maybe they dont even have the stock in? they may place an order with their suppliers once they have our orders - explaining upto 7 days delivery.

i will post when i get a dispatch email.

Well I think everyone should just relax, fair enough we're all annoyed that they increased the prices and yes, it is very dishonest. But they have brought them back down to the original price and are honouring the deal as it was which is great.
And it was a great deal especially for the people that got an extra £6 off from topcashback.

I can imagine getting atleast 3000 orders in one day is a hell of a lot to deal with especially with all the other mess going on and all the complaint emails coming in. This would be a bit of a headache for any business. So in my opinion ! think we got the deal we wanted and should give them a bit of a break so they can just concentrate on getting all our sunnies out to us and sorting out the refund for the people that overpaid.

This deal doesn't reflect badly on MSE what so ever, how can they know another company is going to put the price up. As previously said its a great free site that saves us all money and helps us save! It has saved me over £1500 and i have been a member for less than a year. So thanks for helping to sort this out MSE!!

Ive not got mine yet either. Ordered at 07.45 yesterday morning only minutes after the website was accepting the vouchers. My glasses were stated as in stock, and Ive just had a look on the site and they are still in stock today. Out of the couple of thousand or so they processed in the first 24 hours I would have thought mine would have been amongst that considering the time I placed the order yesterday morning.

And as for the poster whinging about its only a 10%-ish saving. Well i paid, in total £51 for a pair of glasses that would have been £80, which from my maths is a little bit more than 10%. And I wouldnt even compare the fact that you can buy 'the same' on Ebay considering the amount of fake goods that are listed on there. I would rather pay a bit more and know Im getting the real deal rather than risk getting some look-a-likes from the far east.

Could I suggest you move this to the top of your post? People don't always read to the bottom, so are more likely to post off topic threads and create work for the BG/ Team.
