since the card never leaves your hands how can it be safer ? if the card says MR or MRS its irellavent, also on the receipt does it state the card holders name ? on the chip and pin terminal receipts ?
Not entirely true - some stores, notably the dreaded Tesco - don't allow the card to remain with the customer. They haven't linked the till to the keypad for card insertion. Try it and see. And they don't intend to. That means that the assistant has access to your entire card number, date of expiry AND the three digit code on the reverse, everything needed for fraudulent internet/telephone transactions and you can complain til you're blue in the face.
I had to use Tesco yesterday and the assistant told me that I can't insert the card in the keypad for security reasons!  When I explained that the card should never have to leave my hands, for security reasons, she sighed heavily and shrugged her shoulders.0 -
I called Halifax card services as I dont have a pin number for my One credit card - and to be honest it wasn't a bad idea because it means I would not use it.
However when I called, they stated that my card is not a chip and pin, so i asked if I could have one - "not right now-you will get one in due course" and you can sign , as shops have to let people sign if their card is not a chip and pin card".
it sounds like it was a hassle to send me a new cost, and I imagine cost.
oh well happy signing0 -
Pins safer, or Safety in Numbers????

In the interests of balance, from the same site as James linked to above:Brits happy with chip and pin
Currently 86 per cent of shoppers are comfortable with the new security system, up from 58 per cent last year, figures from Alliance & Leicester reveal.
And the introduction the technology has seen card fraud fall by 33 per cent, with gross losses on counterfeit card fraud reduced by 60 per cent.
"A year on from chip and pin the overwhelming majority of consumers are comfortable with using the system, and recognise the benefits it has brought in terms of fraud reduction," said Simon Ripton, current account manager at Alliance & Leicester.
"But it isn’t just the security benefits, 52 per cent also say that chip and pin has speeded up transactions – which has to beneficial to consumers and retailers alike."student100 hasn't been a student since 2007...0 -
Student 100 your absolutely correct to put the other side of the argument.
It's nice to know we have a choice! Chip & Signature or Chip & PIN.
I've opted to continue to sign you've opted for PINs (all different I hope).
For several years now the card industry could have been judged as 'misinforming,' consumers, but who am I to say?0 -

Anyone heard anything yet of this supposed new system whereby you have a card reader that plugs into your PC via USB, and you swipe your card and input your pin when making Internet purchases ?
I for one would jump at the chance to sign up for a credit card that uses this system, even if you have to cough up say 50 squiddlies for the reader, it would be worth it for the peace of mind.0 -
no-one knows whats going on. Boots told me yeasterday that in Febuary if you dont know your pin they wont take payment. I said Goldfish isn't chip and pin yet and he said they wouldnt be taking Goldfish then. Absolute rubbish but it will be very awkward in shops if you have to argue about it all the time. The curve that can set a lot of things straight is a smile0

My Medion PC which I bought about 18 months ago, has a multi card reader - along with the usual options (SD, MMC etc,) , according to the manual also has a slot for the use of "Smartcards" - "for home banking (HBCI)" Home Banking Computer Interface? which might be used for such a system. Says "ask your bank" if it "supports Smartcard access".

Strange, my Goldfish has been chip & pin for ages, yet my Amex Blue card is not.
As you say stores will stop accepting signature only cards on Feb 14th (I think), I would have thought Amex would have been well up on the game.0 -

If your Card is a Chip and Signature Card or has only a magnetic stripe and signature strip, you will be able to continue to sign for your purchases as normal, even in shops which have upgraded to the new technology. The PIN that you may have with these types of Card is only for cash withdrawals if you have that facility.
When your current card expires, it will be replaced by a Chip and PIN Card. You do not have to do anything now. We will contact you in advance of sending you a Chip and PIN enabled card. At that time we will send detailed instructions on how to use your new card including how to change your PIN to one you can easily remember should you wish to do so. 0
