Methinks the card industry has been telling us all porkies!
CARD users unable to remember different card numbers or who are worried about security, can ask their bank or card issuer for a chip and signature card, so they can continue to sign for purchases.
Apacs says it is not necessary to be disabled or to suffer from an impairment such as short-term memory loss to be entitled to ask for an alternative card. More than 100,000 new chip and signature cards have already been issued.

Dont use the same PIN for each card - APACS advice. Ask for Chip & Signature!0 -

I said Goldfish isn't chip and pin yet and he said they wouldnt be taking Goldfish then. Absolute rubbish but it will be very awkward in shops if you have to argue about it all the time.
Just had my non chip and pin switch card refused today in Iceland
The manager was called by the sales assistant without her even trying my card and she pointed out it wasn't a chip and pin card. He tried to tell me
he couldn't take it without a number, I told him there was no number as it wasn't a chip and pin card. He pointed to to the holograph on the back of my card and said this card is a chip card, this is the chip and so you need a number :rotfl:
As this arguement was holding up the only till that was open I left my shopping there and went to Tesco. I feel an email coming on to Iceland to express my annoyance at their lack of understanding chip and pin
But funnily enough he did say he would have taken a credit card without a chip and pin0 -
If you experience a problem using your credit or debit card you are encouraged to inform the Chip & PIN/Signature people via their website:

Thank you James for the pointer to Chip & Pin people. Until I read their Q&As I was under the impression that one of the advantages of C&P is that your card doesn't leave your hands.
It appears this is not true, it is up to the retailer apparently. I'll have to bite my tongue next time I'm in Tesco!Retired and Happy.0 -
Tried to pay for a curry the other night over the phone with card but was told that they are no longer able to do it, as from 14.02 chip and pin rules state that pin must be entered and customer present. Ive always paid over the phone with my card. Had to raid penny jar !!
Does anyone know if this is the case or were they just being awkward??0 -
Your curry house were talking complete rubbish for general circumstances.
Basically - you have 2 methods of making a purchase via a card:
1) Customer present. This has several rules depending on your card - if it's C&P - and the retailer is C&P enabled - you must use C&P, otherwise signature is acceptable.
2) Customer not present. Well .. that's what those 3 digits on the back of the card are for - they are to validate that the person in possession of the card is the one offering it.
So - what IS possible is that your curry house has the credit card facilities to do customer present transactions, but doesn't have the ability to do Customer Not Present ones. In the past, they would, of course, have been able to put the card through as though you were there and say they had validated the signature (when of course they hadn't) - now they can't use that work around.
