Just had my non chip and pin switch card refused today in Iceland icon8.gif

The manager was called by the sales assistant without her even trying my card and she pointed out it wasn't a chip and pin card. He tried to tell me
he couldn't take it without a number, I told him there was no number as it wasn't a chip and pin card. He pointed to to the holograph on the back of my card and said this card is a chip card, this is the chip and so you need a number :rotfl:

As this arguement was holding up the only till that was open I left my shopping there and went to Tesco. I feel an email coming on to Iceland to express my annoyance at their lack of understanding chip and pin icon12.gif

But funnily enough he did say he would have taken a credit card without a chip and pin icon7.gif

Letter of apology and a £10 voucher for Iceland followed my complaint to Head Office of Iceland. They got in touch with the store to "refresh" their training regarding chip and pin.

Chip and PIN Blunder Leaves OAP Penniless:

    http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/news/viewarticle.aspx?id=342887

Summary ... Blind OAP with speaking difficulities has malfunctioning card ... people refuse to deal with her carer. Only co-incidence with C&P was that it was a C&P card. Fact is - the problem here was bad customer care that left her without money. If they had dealt more sympathetically with her - a correct card would have been sent out and everything would have been fine.

    OAPs sent home without their shopping: (Chip & PIN failure);

Summary ... OAP's card fails to authorise. Tesco won't let them take shopping. Police bring them back in - Tesco talk to card issuer, card magically works. Not a C&P problem - simply a card auth problem

Liability Shift (if your PINs been used):

I wonder what would have happened without a letter from the press?

Summary - person has fraud committed, Bank claims they must have revealed their pin. No details given - e.g. was the pin used or not - however, bank behaviour very bad. No excuse here. Notice though, that once it was shown that they hadn't been negligent - it was fine. We will naturally go through this period until the Bank's staff are properly trained - much like the early days of skimming.

  • Hi All,
New to this forum so here goes with my first post.
I used my Abbey debit card today in Tesco and put in my pin number and all went ok, then removed my card and found it had a hole where the chip used to be!
The chip had fell out and a pair of long tweezers and a bewildered shop asistant later they managed to get the chip out of the machine.
I rang Abbey and now have to wait up to a week for a new card.
This is my 4th card this year from abbey, usually its the strip on the back that gets damaged so I thought chip and pin would be a good thing but now I am not so sure!

I think that must be a coincidence.

The AID is an "application identifier" and is in no way linked to your PIN.
Application Identifier: the unique code associated with a card application, which allows the terminal to select a suitable application within the card for a given operation.
    from http://www.mikehendry.co.uk/glossary.html

As I understand it, most CCs will have only one "application". For instance for Mastercard the AID is always A0000000041010.

Wouldn't it be great if France used the same PIN system as the UK - but they don't. So no you won't be able to use your pin number card abroad, you'll have to sign - certainly for the time being anyway.

France use (and have done for years) an online PIN checking system (much like our cash machines) which is completely different to our offline chip and pin system.

What do these cases have to do with UK Chip & Pin? One of the features of Chip & Pin is that the Pin is checked by the PED (Pin Entry Device) i.e. the retailers till system never gets it's hands on it. So this type of fraud could never happen with a Chip & Pin card.
