I was speaking to a cashier in Asda's tonight and she said that they would no longer accept any card without a PIN from the end of August. I don't know how clued she really was as I tried to explain to her the chip reader was refusing my Amex because it wasn't chip and pin enabled, but I don't think she got it. She refused to swipe it as well. >:(

That's bad. I had one today too - Oscott Equipments, a local motor parts trader. When I went to pay, they had a completely enclosed booth/kiosk affair, with a slot just wide enough to pass cards etc through and sign receipts. The woman took my CC and put it in the C&P reader which was INSIDE, hovered her hand over the keypad and then asked me for my PIN! She was expecting me to just tell her what it was. After reading this thread (with the bar incident a while ago) it seems that this practice is rife. Where do I complain?
  • I work for a global retailer, and we have had the trials in Northampton until May this year. All our stores are now up and running with chip & pin, so Amex need to get their fingers out.
On the subject of security etc. there is a lot of cash machine card and pin theft on the go at the moment, best thing to do to overcome this...go to a supermarket buy a packet of gum and get cash back... and the supermarkets don't charge a fee for this like some banks do!
  • saver smurf..thats wrong ASDA will be accepting cards without C&P probably until Feb next year, the banks are now dragging their heels in renewing the signature only cards.

As long as your card isn't cloned at the retailers and a crook gets hold of your PIN! Great combination a cloned card and genuine PIN, better still a genuine card & genuine PIN. The latter is a crooks dream.

From spot & stop card fraud. an industry leaflet on procedures to Spot & Stop Card Fraud.

    One indicator is:

"Watch for customers making low-value purchases but asking for high-value cashback"

Will ASDA be turning away custom? Millions of UK cards won't be Chip & PIN compliant by this time. What about cards whose logos ASDA display that are not UK issued cards (not chip & PIN)? Will ASDA be turning away those customers too? How will this stand with Trading Standards?

What's ASDA's policy on Chip & Signature Cards? Were Chip & Signatue Cards part of the Northampton trial? Have you ever heard of Chip & Signature Cards?

(Where applicable change ASDA to read International Retailer).

  • I have yet to have a single Chip and Pin card in my wallet, most of my cards expire end 2005 early 2006.

If ASDA wished not to accept mine for payment, that'll be fine by me, they'll just have to put the stuff back on the shelf.

    Their loss not mine

The Northampton trial was only for C&P cards, the banks never mentioned Chip and Signature!

As for other issuers (I assume foreign banks?) who do have chip and signature, this is some thing I will bring up, however there are some scripts in the program for C&P that if the customer forgets their PIN, then there is a fallback to and AMV (Alternative Method of Verification) this is usually in the form of a signature.

Although my blue Amex card has a chip at the front, it is not enabled for Chip and Pin payment. I rang Amex customer services and the lady told me that they are going to have it phased in from 2005 onwards.

The problem now is that every time I go to a supermarket (e.g. Morrisons, Safeway, etc.) when they have Chip and Pin payment facility, the cashier automatically put my card into the Chip and Pin keypad which, obviously does not work, before swiping the card to get the transaction authorised. This is totally time-wasting at checkouts and I now have to tell the cashier every time that my blue Amex card does not work with the Chip and Pin keypad.
  • Same problem here.

One cashier in my local Safeway the other week was having none of it when I told her that Amex weren't live yet and asked if I'd got another card I could use!

I trust you firmly said "no", and insisted on signing instead?
