I would also suggest asking the officers for their badge numbers when they stop, they should also be very civil with him to and call him 'sir' or 'madam' if a lady is driving, if he has any concerns he should ask to make a complaint against the officers if he is feeling 'harrassed' by them for no reason. Any complaint against an officer HAS to be dealt with by a higher officer, and they usually come by and have a word with you about.
I know also from watching the likes of 'road wars' etc on tv, all they need to do is to get to speak to you to see if there is a whiff of drugs/booze from the breath then they get to breathalise/caution you.
I thought for a search of a vehicle they have to have due cause for it, because if anything was to be found then it can be classed as an illegal search. I wouldn't let them near my boot unless they had a darn good reason, for all I know they might drop a wee packet of something in there and arrest me.
Thanks to all the competition posters.

In my 23 years of driving, the only time I have ever been stopped by the RUC was on a Anti-Terrorist VCP a few times.Just shows you how times have changed.

If your Hubbie feels the police who have pulled him are a bit off in their attitude, get him to ask "Is this a stop then?". If so the police need to give him paperwork to that affect and fill in a few forms. Surprising how many say it isnt a stop at that point and allow you on your way.

What paperwork has to be filled in for a roadside stop/check then ??

1.The days of calling people "Sir" or "Madam" are well gone and quite rightly so - nothing wrong with asking people their names and using them
2.What is the problem with speaking to drivers ? and if their breath smells of alcohol, they should be breathalysed - could be one of your own that gets knocked down and killed by a drunk-driver next time eh ?
3.The vast majority of searches conducted are voluntary ie "can I look in your boot pls" is a voluntary action - if it was refused, then the officers has to have due reason
4.Watching "Police Wars" etc gives people a warped sense fo what the Police Serice is there for - give it a miss if I were you

I would be asking politely at the local nick to see what they say.

I do like a good joke ! My "local nick" is like Fort Knox, all you ever see are cars screaming out of the back yard with lights on and sirens wailing. If you want to speak to anyone there is a yellow phone by the (locked) front door which puts you through to the "Divisional HQ" 13 miles away - total waste of space !

it could be as he is seen early doors in different cars ... the question could be stolen cars? burglaries in the area? or maybe they just having a purge on xyz areas for a while... i wouldnt go the nick as they will prob think your hiding something and pull him more, they will soon get fed up and stop..
after all we moan they dont do anything and are never around, cant have it all ways...

THE CHAINS OF HABIT ARE TOO WEAK TO BE FELT UNTIL THEY ARE TOO STRONG TO BE BROKEN... :A
  • At that time of a morning they should be stopping people, if they were in the nick doing nothing then we'd also be moaning about that!

I disagree that he shouldn't be stopped more than once. The general public see the Police as one entity but in realilty there are probably over 60 officers working that area on shifts and they wouldn't discuss who they stopped and not to stop them again with each other as a stop with no offences or interesting intel comming from it just wouldn't be discussed. Theres also no reason in not stopping people after they've been stopped by collegues as it would give criminals a free reign.

Unfortunately, he just looks like the Police should stop him. Be that the way he looks, the way he drives, the car he drives or just the time of the morning. Thats just the way it is.

I work very early some mornings and normally cycle to work so I get stopped a fair bit too..... and I used to be one!

I would enquire at the station whether the vehicle has a section 59 marker against it, at worst it is letting the police know your concerns at the regular stops, hopefully the desk seargent will have a word with the ground troops.

Desk Sergeant :rotfl: Real ashes to ashes, they went out a good few years ago I'm afraid, most of the operational sergeants are up to their truncheons in paperwork or corporals (acting up Pc's).

I wouldn't get arsey, and fail the attitude test, just ask why have I been stopped and point out how many times, but politely.

Unfortunately the police are dammed if they do and dammed if they don't, so a good old fashioned lose, lose situation for them, I would agree there is possibly some form of operation running, possibly key burglars, the prime time is often between 3am - 6am

No paperwork what so ever for a stop. Stop search requires the person in question to be told what they're being searched for and in certain circumstances they will get a form to explain this but even then, not always.

Police have no need to give a reason for why they stopped you, they can talk to anyone. Equally, you don't have to stay with them unless you're under arrest.
