Thanks for the Birthday Greetings
Finally a day off work! Had a lie in this morning (9am is a lie in for me!), take away last night .. I'm being spoiled! Dyed my hair red last night so first task of the day is to remove the red stains still present on my scalp/forehead. Then we're off to put some flower's on my Nana's grave. She was buried last November with my Grandad but they've only recently added her name to the gravestone and I've not been since. It would've been her birthday 6 days ago but I was working so I didn't have a chance to go so better late than never!
Then we're off to visit some friends then coming back to get ready for a night out, I haven't had a proper night out for ages! Was a bit worried about overspending as we're going out tonight and having a party of Friday. Party's funded by Ebay monies and luckily we had an additional tax credits payment made today which means I don't need to worry to much now
My mam came round last night with family birthday cards and I made £70 in birthday money (no one knows what to buy me!) which means I only need to put £20 toward my new Vax, which I can afford with these extra tax credits...edit: have now ordered the new Vax and only had to put £14.95 towards it incl delivery AND I get a free Vax Handheld Vacumm Cleaner + 7% cashback with Quidco!! lucky birthday so far and clean carpets here I come! My mam also got me a potted plant (a gerbera .. it's very pretty but the fancy pot M&S have put it in is far too small for it!) and some Swiss chocolate from M&S too :T
Awaiting the post man now as OH has ordered me something (a surprise!) from Firebox and is hoping it arrives today and my brother says he's sent me something too (Mam must have reminded him it was my birthday!).
N9eav ... enjoy you 4 days off work .. I'm going to!! And hope you feel better soon.
Kyle ... hope you and your WM feel better soon too!
poppyoscar ... hope you hear something soon, not sure of your situation but my friend's OH disappears for days and weeks at a time and I know how hard things are for her.

Hi all, very excited as we are viewing a house next week which should enable us to live a different lifestyle. Won't go into boring details about house and finance side of things but wanted to start a thread where I could ask questions relating to thing like keeping chickens/ starting a veg plot in the new place. I know there's several threads of information and I'm reading through them but I think I'll probably have some very specific questions and would like to keep it all together for my own reference.
So here's the first things;
chickens, how much space how much time do they need? If we wanted to have 6-12 eggs a week how many hens should we be looking at (happy to wring their necks for meat as well)
Veg plot, Dad always had allotments so I'm pretty up to scratch but has anyone had success using unconventional containers for raised bed planting? (I'd like to protect crops from maurading child and puppy). I was thinking of a few old wooden toy trunks (about 11/2 ft x 3ft) that I have. Drilling drainage holes and lining them with plastic - how long do you reckon they'd last?
Best/most cost effective crops to grow? I know onions and potatoes are easy but do you really get the best use fo space out of them. (ie for hte amount you ened to grow to feed a family)
I'm likely to have equivilant space to four 3ft x 6ft raised beds.
INSIDE STUFF!
had anyone got an old fashioned pantry/larder for keeping food cool? I'm also thinking we'll need a big old chest freezer but it would have to go in the garage/workshop, my inlaws always kept theirs in the shed but I read somewhere that this wasn't a good idea now?DEBT: £500 credit card £800 Bank overdraft

Morning all,
poppyoscar, hope you hear soon from DH and that all's well
candy (((hugs))) hope it's a good talk, hope you manage a lunchbreak too!
Smokey, all the best for today, looking forward to hearing how the day was
Everyone else, sorry I haven't got my head round who's who yet, ((((BIG HUGGLES)))) to all who need them
I'm up late today--restless night as DH has a cold (staying up chatting didn't help my tiredness either lol)
Have to get on with uni stuff today and will do some washing cos it's lovely and blowy outside. With luck I'll manage some cleaning and allotment work too. Had brekkie, tidied a bit, and walked the dog so far so not exactly industrious yet today, so we'll see. I really need to get myself to bed earlier, lol.
Have a good day all, off to do the washing and fill the s/c.

Hi, there, halia! We have a long thread on keeping hens - hey....let's keep chickens! Our hens lay about 4 eggs per week each (during the summer - fewer in the cooler months).
As for growing veg, the best place for that is on the Greenfingered board. IMO the best crops to grow are those that you like, and those that are expensive in the shops (sweetcorn, asparagus, raspberries, beans, snap peas).
I have a pantry and love it. There's a thread on that here - Old Fashioned Pantry.
The best place for encouragement on an OS lifestyle is the Old Style Daily thread. I'll add your post to it, and I'm sure you'll get a warm welcome.

Morning everyone
Poppyoscar - you sound so worried and concerned about your OH. I hope he reappears sooner rather than later and does something to sort this sort of situation out as it's not fair on anyone. In the meantime I'm wishing some strong vibes across the internet waves to you.
N9eav - _pale_:eek::silenced::silenced::silenced: - that was a little bit too much information, thank you!!
Kyle - maybe Twink will come over with some chips to help you get your strength back. Hope you are feeling 100% again soon.
Melvis, I don't think we've met. How do you do? (See I can be polite!) And happy birthday!!
Aghhhhh I could scream:mad::mad::mad: flipping recruitment agencies do my head in, they really do! I had sent my cv to an agency in response to a job they had advertised - so I phoned up to ensure they had got it. "oh yeah, it's here" he said, "why not come on in and we'll have a chat about it". So off I went the 40 miles to Belfast, the git kept me waiting 20 minutes after my appointment time (and stank of cigarette smoke!) then asked me if I had my cv with me. Eh what??? He hadn't bothered to look at it, and if that wasn't irritating enough the job I'd applied for was a pretend job to generate applicants for their database. So an 80 mile round trip for nothing!! Like I can afford to waste that much petrol!!!!!! It's like banging your head off a brick wall sometimes...
On the plus side, I did manage to find some lovely earrings reduced from £8.00 to £2.87. Well, a girl has to keep her priorities in order, huh?!
I've been invited to a hen night this Saturday, like I can afford that right now. It's in two parts, cinema and a meal - cinema is a bit boring so think I'll cry off that one and just go for the meal. And I'll drive so that I don't have to drink and pay for wine. I think the bride to be has plans for me staying over but I don't want to leave my poor kitties all alone over night so I am definitely driving home. My entire family thinks I am a bit dim for investing so much emotion/time/money etc etc in my kitties - but to be frank my kitties have been here for me and keeping me strong while certain members of my family have been more interested in dragging me down!
Oi Churchie, you cracking the whip at poor little defenceless PennyPenguin??? Ya big bully!!!!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
I'm off now, gotta look for a job. Bye for now.

Hi everyone - just found time for a quick post in case any of you are missing the 'M'ing! I am knee deep in bits of porch and a DH who must have every single tool he possesses on the hall floor and halfway up the stairs. I can't complain any more; I just have to bite my lip and endure it in the hope of a good finished result.
I'll call back later when I have more time; the phone keeps going this morning and I am walking round in circles trying to get just one job completed! Just wanted to send very gentle (((hugs))) to all in need - lots of you judging by the quick read of the thread I've just done.
Weather bright and sunny one minute, cold, windy and gloomy the next! Perfect June weather, I think not!
Anyway, sorry to rush. Will call back later.
