Candygirl, I'm glad your Dad has decided to have the radiotherapy. Mum had it for the lung cancer and it worked really well and gave her quite a bit more time. ( chemo really didn't do anything much for her) She didn't get nauseous this time either, she did when she had it for breast cancer years ago. Hope it goes well for him.
DG, of course we've been footie watching!!!! I love my footie, just wish England had made it
Well DGS loved the school outing. Appears it's a mix of a few animals, and an extensive nature trail with ponds, woods etc. He loved finding all the crawlies under rocks and logs:eek: And he saw a spider that was as big as his outstretched arms:rotfl: Nanny is sooooooo sorry she missed that one:rolleyes: And the pig was enormous. Sausages anyone?:D
Off to watch House. Well most of it, I was so caught up in the footie I forgot to record the first 10 minutes:rotfl:

Its my first post on here, hope you dont mind me joining you?!
Just noticed Snowy you must be a fellow Northern Ireland-er (ha ha that so doesnt work!)
Hello Confused! yes I am a Norn Ironer - as are Pink-winged, and her [STRIKE]bonkers[/STRIKE] lovely sister Haribo-Junkie who lives in Scotland, so she does.
I am having another session of ripping my hair out. The bride to be of the hen night phoned and confirmed that we are going for a meal and then to the cinema and then for another meal and then out drinking and that she has booked me into an hotel. I told her point blank that I am not staying in a hotel...seems she has booked some rooms before she even knew how many were coming !!!!!!!! I can't afford all this but it's too embarrassing to say so and I really don't want to have to explain myself as I want to keep my situation to myself. Why oh why can't I be kidnapped by aliens for the weekend??!! Once the hen night is over then I have to get an outfit and a present, so more money but fingers Xed I'll be employed by then.
Luckily I didn't decide to hold my breath until a recruitment agency phoned me straight back like she said she would earlier, otherwise my head would have turned blue and gone pop by now. I had forgotten how bad some agencies can be (apologies to any recruitment consultants reading this, I know you're not all bad) and while they might be very busy it is not right to fob people off with half truths.
That's enough whinging for one evening, see you all tomorrow.

Can anyone tell me more about not leaving appliances on standby? I switch my television off completely but won't the Feeview box, CD/radio etc loose all their settings if turned off? Sorry if this is already in this thread and I have missed it.0

we have our freeview/cd/dvd etc plugged into a extension lead which is then plugged into a socket that we can switch off at the wall (complicated I know.. but we couldn't reach the plugs when they were behind the appliances), we switch ours off when not in use - freeview remembers what channel it was set to, 1 video remembers the time (an internal battery) but the others loose the time settings - it is a pain when we wish to timer-record but we don't do that often so we "cope" with it!
We had 11 items on standby and this was using the equivalent energy of a 60 watt lightbulb being left on constantlythankfully dh saw sense and agreed to set them up so we could switch everything off when not in use!

This is probably a dumb question....but I'll ask it anyway!
If I put my freezer on a timer so it was only on during the day (for example) and off at night when there was no chance of the door being opened....or even so that it went on and off during the day like say a central heating boiler...would it save electricity?
We had a power cut a couple of weeks ago, and it was off for about six hours with no ill effects at all, and my neigbour said that a freezer would be fine off for up to 24 hours anyway if you didn't open the door.
Also what is the minimum temperature that you can set a freezer at, and does turning that down make a difference?
Thanks

On the lines of saving electric generally - has anyone read the book "Do it yourself 12 volt solar power" by Michel Daniek? Is it worth having? I have the vague idea that I read somewhere recently that a householder had managed for a matter of notalotta money to fix up one room in their home on this 12 volt thingie and everything in that room ran from it anyway. Even 1 room where one could use whatever power one wanted without worrying about it could be an idea - at least one could be warm enough - and run a computer to read the MSE website;)0

Interesting question katieowl...
I know nothing about how a freezer works, but I would imagine it has some sort of thermostat to keep it to a pre-set temperature... if you switch it off it would lose temperature so that when you switched it back on., it would need to work hard to get back down to temp....
Not sure if I explained that well
Say a freezer at -10c drops 1 degree every hour and so has to cool itself back to 10 degrees once every hour.... from midnight until 6 in the morning it would need to come on 6 times to cool by 1c each time = total = 6 degrees total cooling (and however much energy it takes to cool those 6 degrees...
By the same method, if you switch the power off at midnight, it will warm by 6c by 6:00 the next morning so when it comes back on it would need to cool itself by 6c again using the same amount of power, only all at once rather than a bit at a time...
Not sure if thats how it really works?!?0 -
Another book I'd like to know if anyone has read (and if anyone would like to lend me??? I am very trustworthy
) is called "How to live without electricity and learn to like it" by Anita Evangelista....it's apparently currently out of print and is a USA publication. It's about £40 on Amazon  secondhand! That's a lot of kilowatts if it's not a good read! In the States it's about £7, but US Amazon doesn't have it new either.
Regards

Some years ago I saw a 'gizmo', a bit like a timer, that was plugged into the socket and interrupted the electricity every 10 or 15mins for a while. Not sure of the ratio of time on to time off but because the periods of each were so short, there was no ill effect to the temperature of the freezer at all.
Surely an ordinary timer would do. On for 30mins and off for 15mins might work. Perhaps someone technical could step in here and put me straight?0
