Annie2005, where do you buy the Daylight Bulbs please? My Mum always says that her bedroom is so dark that it makes her feel depressed as soon as she wakes up, even when the sun is shining. I must admit that her bedroom is an odd shape and the window is not very big, so if a Daylight Bulb could boost her mood, it would be worth the investment!

    Thankyou in anticipation,

    Alice-Mary

Homebase sells daylight bulbs they are in blue boxes, I have one in a lamp in the bedroom so I can sew !icon7.gif

I can't get to a John Lewis or a Homebase without making special trips..... in fact I'm not even sure where the closest of either is !!!

Just checked on-line -- Homebase is 6 miles each way, and nowhere near anywhere else I shop at, or 9.5 miles each way but near a place I use for printer cartridges a couple of times a year. John Lewis is just under 9 miles each way, and at a complex I use once every couple of years........

I've already got a huuuuuge mountain of bags full of those things :o

Had another look this morning, and still can't find them on the site anyway  Not like I'm in a hurry for them though, so may wait until I'm next our for printer cartridges (which will probably be towards the end of next month at the latest anyway ;) )

Thanks for the heads up on Mr T's light bulb offer - got my 5 for 40p today, saved £4.50 in total = 8p per light bulb plus points - brilliant.:D
When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on

  • We've just received our electricity bill and it works out at £1.50 of electricity per day which I think is terribly high considering we both work all day so nothing is really on.

I'm now moaning at MrS all the time to switch things off because I'm sure we don't need to be using that much juice! I've replaced all lightbulbs downstairs except the 4 halogens in our kitchen with energy saving ones but upstairs is more tricky as every bulb is a GU10 halogen. As soon as I can find an acceptable enrgy saving replacement for them they'll be going too although it will be a costly job as there are 4 downstairs and 25 upstairs. Of those 9 need to be dimmerable which bumps the price up even more  I've got an LED one in the hall at the bottom of our stairs but it doesn't really give out a quality light so I don't want them all over.

I have even dug out an old parafin lamp that I think we can restore in order to cut down even more on lighting although I shan't be using parafin as you can get less smelly version of burning oils now which should be more pleasing.

Everything is switched off when it isn't needed so I can't really think where else to cut down. Maybe head torches are the way forward!

If this wind goes on much longer we will be saving a lot on our elect , cos it will go OFF ! There's weather warnings out for the north west & islands of 100mph winds - but I think they maybe got the area wrong because I have never experienced winds like this in my life! And torrential rain with it. Feels like my roof is going and the windows are flexing.... the shipping forecast up there is storm force 10 increasing to hurricane force 12. It sounds like thunder but its the wind :(

My last 3 electricity bills (each covering 4 weeks, so 12 weeks in total) work out at £1.16/day (after adding on vat but before dual fuel and on-line discounts).

I'm surprised ours is that low TBH, as for the first 4 weeks of this my DH was a real pain at leaving lights on and the TV on standby -- and for 6.5 of the last 8 weeks I've had my elder son home who's even worse (laptop and X-box plugged in and turned on 24/7, even when he's out, and phone charger plugged in and switched on without a phone at the other end of it!).

I think my biggest saving has come from replacing a freezer (which was done at around week 3 of this 12 week period). The old one used over 1000kWh a year -- which was a touch under a QUARTER of our total useage from 6/10/07 to 6/10/08 -- and my new one states 254kWh in the blub. I've yet to check how close mine is to that though ;)

My other noticable saving seems to have come from not using the built in oven more than once or twice a week (when I'm cooking more than 1 pizza, or oven chips which I cook on a large 'vented' tray, or several different items at the same time). I also have a combi oven, and as the capacity is less it takes less time to reach the required temp when used as a conventional oven than the built in oven does. I was convinced this had to mean it used less power, and my bill certainly came down (albeit not a huuuge amount) once I started this switch on a regular basis.
