  • I'm in for the December challenge too.
I'm so chuffed,I got my quarterly bill today for both gas and electric.Duel fuel. It's the huge sum of £74.85 for the whole of three months.I usually spend more than that on electric for three months and I'm almost £200 in credit. It has been so easy as well.
I have'nt realy done that much just switched everything off standby and used my remoska. That apart from not putting the heating on(which has'nt been a hardship)is all we've done.Everything else has been the same usage realy.
So I'm going to keep doing things just as we have been,it's been interesting realy and I feel more inspired than ever now I've seen my bill in black and white.

Yes, I am, I have got the winter and summer duvet on my bed, couldn't move at all last night though, it was like having Nellie the elephant on top of me. Bedroom thermometer says 17.3 degrees ... surely some mistake???
Husband won't let me bubblewrap our new conservatory

why dont you bubble wrap the ajoining door between the house and conservatory, it may make a difference if air in the consevatory is a lot colder than the air in the house.

I'm trying to convince the offspring that keeping something on their feet--other than socks!--at this time of the year, is more beneficial to their health than creating a
    fashion statement :wall:

I'm going to look at plimsole-style shoe type thingies cuz Pup doesn't seem as interested in those as he does my lovely cosy slippers :o And perhaps the offspring will be more inclined to wear them if they 'personalise' their own like I used to with my tennis whites when I was at school :p

I very nearly caved with putting the heat on yesterday but snuggled into the cheapie fleece & was toastie within minutes :j Again, Pup thinks HE is entitled to share too & wriggles around under the cover till he's comfy...but you do get a furry HWB to compensate :D

Well, for the last couple of weeks I've been quite complacement about the heating -- thinking it's set to come on if needed, but I've cranked it down a shade so still shouldn't be on as much as last year.

Yesterday the house was freezing!! The control thermostat was 'clicking' at 14 degrees, and I could tell DH was feeling the cold. So I turned the heating on and cranked it up from 17 to 20, thinking I'd leave it there for a couple of hours then turn it down. The thermostat started to click at around 18 after 3 hours -- but never once did the radiators get above stone cold!!!

I've been round the system today, and we don't seem to have an airlock anywhere. The boiler is definitely firing in as we've got hot water -- but if the system is on for heating only there's nothing venting from the boiler (have to climb over half the contents of the garage to get to the boiler, so it's easier to check the external vent for signs of life ;) )

So I've now got BG coming to look at it tomorrow afternoon..... I suspect there may be a fault on thermostat, as according to that we're warming up again today -- but even with it set to heat to 30 (was desperately trying to kick the system in for a short while) the radiators aren't budging off "icy"

So it looks like my gas useage won't have gone up on a daily average from last reading (Tuesday) to tomorrow afternoon -- but after that is anyone's guess as I'm going to have to keep the house at least 'tepid' for DH (he made a comment yesterday about it not having been 'particularly warm' for the last few weeks!)

  • How are people attaching their bubble wrap to doors and windows?
I'm thinking of applying a discreet square to the lower panel of front and back doors, not glazed panels but that white plastic double glazed stuff! I don't really want to use loads of tape and find there's sticky stuff left which won't clean off in spring. I don't really want the bubble wrap to be noticable as back door is in living room. I think it will just provide a little bit more insulation and keep my precious heat in a bit longer.

I did tweak my thermostat up a little bit a couple of days ago as it was on around 14 and just not putting heating on at all. Now it kicks in just a little here and there and it is lovely not to be shivery. I'm still wearing two fleeces and snuggle under a blanket on the settee, have always had blankets in the living room they're just so cosy!

Sorry for ignorance but what's the December challenge, is it holding out without CH until 1st December? (I would have a mutiny on my hands if I proposed this to my family I think!). Thanks

I'm up for the November challenge - maybe even December if I can! Nice and toasty warm right now - have on fleecey pyjamas, thick tracksuit over them, thick sox and furry boots, haven't needed to put big fleece ontop yet - good job I live on my own so it doesn't matter if I look like Steptoe's mum!!!! Anyone who has shop called T.J. Hughes near them - found flannelette/fleecey/satin pyjamas yeasterday -2 pair for £9.00 - even beats Primark prices - stocked up on fleecy ones! :D
When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on

I haven't tried it myself but I read on another thread you spray the glass with water and the bubblewrap sticks to it.

    this weeks results-

    Last week you spent:
    • £6.58 on gas
    • £7.80 on electricity
Total you have spent on energy since starting imeasure (9 weeks ago):
    • £39.50 on gas
    • £68.88 on electricity
Gas usage is creeping up a bit now as I have had the ch on a few times this week in the eves. Still not set the timer, holding out till November 1st ! Still happy with the bubble wrap. Spent today at home and late morning the sun was streaming thru the windows and I managed to get the temperature up to 23c whilst showing an outside temp of just 10c. Right now its 6.2c outside and 19.3 in here with no heating used today at all. I will turn it on for 30 min later on this eve.
