I've just been switching my halogen heater on in the living room.
I've also been drying my clothes or heating dish water, with the remaining heat from the oven, after it has cooked my food.0 -
Not applicable to everyone, but the front of my flat, kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom(2) all have velux windows, and they face south west. On bright days, I hang my washing on the rail of the velux windows, even if cold, it's suprising how dry they get, even in winter days.
So long as I remember to keep the doors shut, in whatever rooms I am washing in, to avoid draughts.
I also have hooks in these rooms, near the windows - to hang washing from, so I can take advantage of the sun.0 -
We had snow here and it was chilly this morning but as I was off work and the kids are on their hols we just stayed in our beds for a long lay in and it was bliss!! We then had a hor breakfast, put on lots of layers and went out to the park to meet friends but the sun was shining and we all felt hot in the end!! Then had an appt for son so sat in clinics heated room, then dropped him at a party and DD and I went to sainsburys, home and unpacked then time to pick up son! Made tea then DH came home and complained about how cold it was (12 on thermostat) and said it was much colder this morning and he was fed up with me saying no heating til Nov 1st and promptly went and put the heating on!!
The kids and I had done so well all day (infact all week!) but that's it, I've failed to make it to Nov 1st so near and yet so far!!
Good luck to everyone else and at least I had the heating off for longer than last year so I should be proud!!0 -
I read of a way to make a radiator using a large board with copper coins stuck all over. You then paint the whole thing black. Then make a frame down each side of the board (not top or bottom) with 1 inch baton. Fix some clear perspex over it and point it at the sun. You need to lean it against something.
The idea is that it pulls cold air from the bottom and shoves it out of the top. I do seem to remember lots of arguments about whether or not it would work any better than the sun just coming in though.Debt: 16/04/2007:TOTAL DEBT [strike]£92727.75[/strike] £49395.47:eek:   £43332.28 repaid 100.77% of £43000 target.MFiT T2: Debt [STRIKE]£52856.59[/STRIKE] £6316.14 £46540.45 repaid 101.17% of £46000 target.2013 Target: completely clear my [STRIKE]£6316.14[/STRIKE] £0 mortgage debt. £6316.14 100% repaid.0 -

I am well and truly out and just watching all the hardy souls on here. The real winners are the ones who have no heating at all ie no fires or stoves either but I do worry for some because 12 degrees is really too cold for the body to function well. Take care all of you and use your nose when you come in ie smell for any damp whiff and if you smell it then switch on even if very low0

It was very cold yesterday,we've not had snow but we do have frost this morning.Strangely though it does'nt seem so cold.Last night we took our hot water bottles to bed and were asleep by 10.30.
We're away over the weekend and out tonite so we should be able to hold out till Monday at least and there is only us two so it's a lot easier.
I'm just dreading turning it on though because it's going to be so hard to turn it back off and I'm so afraid of going deep into debt next year all because of the need for heat.
Well done Furrypig, like morganb we're both as stubborn as the other and that's how we've coped.I think considering you have children you've done amazing.0 -
Whoever it was who thought of bubble wrap on the windows, big up to them, as its made my living room markedly warmer.
This site also helped me try to have a dual purpose for every heating task. Ive got my halogen heater, drying my clothes. It isn't safe to leave, but I'm right here watching it and changing the garments.
The oven heated the washing up water after it had cooked the tea. It also helped start off some of my clothes drying, before going cold.
It's not that I'm trying to be brave. I'm on incapacity benefit and even if the government stop payment, like the tabloids keep going on about, I know I am not fit for work, and won't go back before I am personally ready, money swiped from me or not. So this penny pinching is all helping loads what with energy prices so unstable.0
