We are a family of six and high users. One day last winter, we used 26kwh in one day . This summer, we started at about 15kwh a day and have reduced that to about 12 or 13. On a good day 8 or 9, on a bad day 17 or 18. I'd like to average 15 a day this winter.

We're paying about 11p a kwh before VAT and discounts which generally cancel each other out.

Family of 3, with a laptop on for around 16 hours a day (, but not in permanent use - probably used for about half that, and on charge for 3-4 hours) and a desktop PC on for between 6 and 12 hours a day (depending on college schedule), using electric grill/oven/combi microwave (this one most) for cooking (alongside gas hob), and with 3 rooms in almost permanent use (needing lighting) plus an energy efficient light on the landing on for about 6 hours a day, and TVs on for 4 hours (main) and 8 hours (portable - we watch different channels, and have agreed to differ on taste!). Our average since 17th Feb 2007 (I have detailed records back that far) is 14 kWh a day for the electricity. The highest average over a bill was 12/12/07-4/2/08 which came in at 16kWh/day.

We're fixed at 8.836p/kWh before VAT and discounts until September 2009 (although I actually pay more for the first 2.5kWh/day as we're now on a No Standing Charge tarrif which saves us money on the gas side, and works out the same on the electricity as the extra on the first 2.5/day totals up to the same as the previous Standing Charge).

don't know of anything that turns it off if it's properly on, but there is an extension lead you could plug the TV and playstation into so that putting the TV onto standby would turn off all appliances plugged into the extension -- I'm in the process of getting one for the TV in the living room (with DVD player, VCR and upcoming F/V box) as DH is a swine for leaving the TV on standby and everything else turned on

ETA: you could put a timer between them and the plug socket, but it would turn them off even if he was using them ;) Might teach him to start turning them off in return for having that removed though -- but I guess it wouldn't work if he can get to it easily to override/remove it

How old is your son? My son was doing exactly this and I told him if I found it on one more time it would be taken away. He went off to school one day, I found it on, so I took it away!! He was really upset. I gave it back 2 days later with the same warning. He now not only turns it all off, but unplugs it as well :j

    aww bless him lol,
It doesnt work with my son , he has autism so will only do what he wants to do , this is why I think I need the help of this plug. My daughter is very good at switching off lights ect , shes 10 years old and makes me laugh because she has watched that advert ON tv that says, "see a red light" ? what does it mean ?
It means "STOP" (WASTING ELECTRICITY) :rotfl:

I've just got one of those energy monitors from Aldi - £6.99 (will save me trying to get to my nearest Lidl!). I'll start testing it out soon on stuff, just trying to work out the settings as the info booklet with it is a little small!

My CH thermostat is set at 16 degrees and heating actually kicked in for the first time on Saturday morning - for 2 hours. Made the most of it by airing all my washing over the radiators.

I'm also experiencing my first hot flushes - but they are more "warm flushes", and are quite enjoyable now the weather is cooler! I'm really into layering my clothes and the top layer is on and off all day long.

My sons both have high powered PCs in their bedrooms which throw out considerable amounts of heat, so I've told them they won't need any heating on at all ;).
