My sons both have high powered PCs in their bedrooms which throw out considerable amounts of heat, so I've told them they won't need any heating on at all ;).

You might want to consider how much their equipment impacts on the electric bill. My husband recently spent a wad of cash upgrading his pc to much more energy efficient hardware. His old one was eating up as much electric in an hour as having the convection oven on for the same length of time. And there's days when its on all day (he works from home a lot, so no choice).

    Just a thought.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Sadly I am one of those people who only irons clothes on the morning that I am going to wear them.

Our wardrobes and drawers are so packed that things only get creased and have to be re ironed it I do them and put them away.

With all of this talk on some of these threads about possible power cuts remember to iron one lot of clothes to keep to one side just in case.

It's not too bad for me as I am a full time mum so I can wear what I like but if my husband, as an office worker, didn't have a clean ironed shirt for work then I am sure he would have to ring in sick! He would be mortified.

    :)

I know some people (especially those in uniform) only iron the v of their shirt if they are wearing a jumper but if you are in a hot office the you have had it.

    :)

Would it be possible to iron the shirt the night before and put it on a hanger maybe on the wardrobe doorknob ready for the morning? Just a thought.
I seem to remember in the Winter of Discontent in the 70's we had some idea of when power cuts would happen and could schedule things accordingly. Don't know if that will be the case this time around though.

Always remember, there is more to life than ironing! If everyone else can't iron, you'll all be creased anyway. In fact lets start now, lets let no ironing become the norm :D

Oh and we have DPs generator for back up, wonder if that would power the washing machine......
One day I might be more organised...........

What I've seen indicates it will be same this time around, which is something at least....

Ironing? What's that? It's not been a word I've known the meaning of since getting my own place in March 1987 (with the exception of a family portrait, weddings and funerals).

I have one of those electricty monitor thingeys from Southern Electric, I am obsessed with it as mentioned in a previous post, but I dont understand it ! doh. How much is a KWHr of electric ? what is an average use per day ?

I have one too........and am also completely obsessed with it:D .......I also dont understand the HWHr thingy.......I love turning things off and on to see how much they use in a month if you left them running.

We put on the electric shower and the monitor worked out at £800 month:eek:
But these things take time, I know that I'm, the most inept that ever stepped.

Had to put the heating on this evening, I was numb and I always feel the cold anyway. Was only on half an hour or so before the timer clicked off anyway

Well, Monday of last week I had to unplug the microwave (so I could use the socket for my CD player while scrubbing out the oven), and decided it could stay off unless it's wanted. It's a bit of a pain as it won't run unless you set the clock first, and having done that so infrequently since buying it early in 2002 I can never remember the right buttons to press !!! But having figured it out (again) I'm just setting it to all zeroes (3 button presses).

So yesterday morning DS asked why it was off (was going to want it at lunch-time to use as a normal oven to cook a Whoopsie! pizza I'd got him - it's a combi so we use that for small quantity oven cooking) -- so I powered it up for him before I went out shopping, and he turned it off at the wall when done without being asked :D

Just had DH yell up the stairs to ask what I've "done" to the microwave, as he wanted to heat up his cereal. He'd flicked it on at the wall, but was looking very perplexed at a scrolling message that said "refer to instruction manual".

He clearly thinks I'm nuts for not leaving it on, but did ask if I wanted it turning off again when he'd finished. A "yes please" from me got raised eyebrows and rolled eyes from him -- but I figure even if it only saves a miniscule amount of electricity by not leaving the clock running (there's another on the main oven that's always on and that we tended to refer to more, and the two never completely agreed anyway) then it's got to be worth doing

You could always put a post it note nearby with exactly what buttons to press to set the clock and make it work ;)

That way you are less likely to be called ;)
