I've had to force my heating to come on since yesterday -- though it's now back on the previous settings so could still be a while 'til it does so automatically.

The house was starting to feel as if it had a permament chill to it (not to the point of being damp), which DS and I were coping with -- but hubby was putting on loads of extra layers yesterday (despite already being pretty well wrapped up) so I was a little concerned as he started radiotherapy on Friday.

The house is now 'snug' but not overly warm, and I will have to continue to monitor the situation. Will be interesting to see what my meter reading says on Tuesday, as I have a reading for a week up to last Tuesday -- so should give me a pretty accurate useage for the CH as I've not adjusted the hot water timings at all, and have found the useage for the hob (the only other gas appliance we have) to be pretty consistent.

It's so miserable looking outside today and chilly too. Finally heard from Warmfront that they are coming to put some NS heaters in on Tuesday which will help heat this house up at last using the econ 7 rate. I get some radiated warmth by reading all these great posts, full of ideas on how to stay warm - thankyou all!
Also found this site for instructions on how to make a homemade flowerpot heater! http://www.heatstick.com/_Process.htm
Am all geared up now to head down to the shed to sort out the flowerpots!
There is also a 'central heating unit' (airmaze) made out of recycled cans but I think that one can wait as it needs sunshine lol...not a lot of it about right now! Also checkout the hummingbird feeder!! :rotfl:

MrsTittlemouse - have to say I'm totally flumoxed at the difference in our prices!! Just checked the leaflet for the Fixed Price tarrif we're on, and we're the second to highest priced area for both the higher and lower priced units (only Yorkshire above, by 0.019p/kWh, on the higher priced units -- and only Northern above, by 0.012p/kWh, on the cheaper priced).

I put us onto fixed price at the start of July, and I know I calculated recently that if I were only switching now it would be almost 12% higher -- but that still wouldn't bring ours anywhere near to what you're paying

I can't understand either, but my bill was, this is reading from the digital meter reading 5149 from 5118= 31 used.Bill for this is £45.88.The woman at Scottish power says it's right but after reading everyone's comments I'm going to ring again. We use 3-5 units(reading from digital meter) in winter and there's no way I could afford over £7 a day for gas alone if these prices are correct.

I can't trace this confusion back through such a long thread but I'm wondering if one of you has an imperial meter and the other has a metric one?

I've only got my head round this one but basically your meter reads gas units, either metric or imperial. These are then multiplied to give kwh which is what we're all charged by.

So to work out costs, you need to know your kwh rate (as charged on your tariff) and the multiplier (approx 11 for metric and 33 for imperial). This will give approx kwh.

So, if your meter says cubic feet, x by 33 and if you meter says cubic meters, x by 11 to get kwh.

well had the rellies round last night and managed with putting the gas fire on in the lounge only but I found it too hot and turned it off!! The rumour had gone round that my heating was off but some of the rellies were surprised at how warm it was without the rads being on!

    I've been Money Tipped!
Hi all, been away, came back to a warm house ... anything was warm compared to walking around London in the cold and rain; so still no heating on here, the 1st November is in sight I'm sure ... although we are going to look into increasing the depth of insulation in our loft as well.
