I've read somewhere that Economy 7 is no longer moneysaving and that if asked, your electricty supplier will remove it (the meter). I think it's because you have to pay a quarterly charge for it? We have it and I don't think it's saving us any money even though we put washing on at night and the dishwasher. Any experts out there know any more?

Different situation because we are a family of six with a combi boiler but in our old house we used the boiler all year round with it on hw only for the summer. I'm sure that having the boiler on for half an hour would be cheaper than using the immersion heater.

thats how we heat our hot water, in summer the rads are never on but the hot water is still heated via the timer setting.

To work out whether E7 saves you money or not, you have to work out what percentage of your usage is in this period. You pay less for units in this period, but generally have a higher standard rate for use outside the E7 period.

How much you need to use on E7 for it to be worth it depends on your rates, but if you read the E7 threads, it looks as it ifs around 30-40%.

I'm afraid you'll have to do the maths to work it out :( - but if you have storage heating it'll be worth sticking with E7.

mrs moneypenny, I'm with SP and I did the same, they are very good, tell you how much you're using per day. That gives you a target to aim for. We're on the standard tarriff and everybody tells me thats high, but when I asked re DD/online tarriff, they wanted more than we are paying just now, so the OH lost the head and said leave it be LOL .But when you know how much in units & money, that yur using, it gives you a base to work on eh.

There is one company that does pre-payment meter at the same charge as direct debit etc, you would have to go on their site to see if they do your area.

I don't know if I am allowed to mention the name of them or not though, I went over to them a few months ago and cannot recommend them highly enough for customer service.

  • The halogen heaters are very cost effective and safe to use. We have one, it has 3 zones, 400w, each zone, so you can have 400, 800 or 1200w. I have only ever used the one zone, it gives out plenty heat, but it is a very bright light.
Edit; forgot to say, I got mine in Poundstretchers and I'm sure it was a lot less than a tenner.

we have one too, and it is VERY bright, they were less than a tenner and i think we might have got ours for nearer a fiver as DH works there and we got staff discount on it! lol

If your a person that likes baths, make sure you fill the bath up with cold water first, then add the hot water, it takes less hot water to heat it up at this point rather than filling it with hot water first then cooling it down with cold water.

Or, better still, don't 'overheat' your water in the first place, negating the need for cooling it down when running a bath.

Was in Wilko's again today - found the stuff so many people seem to be looking for - the plastic sheets you put over draughty windows and seal with a hairdyer - called 'Window Seal' - boxes of 6 sheets for £5.99, or 12 sheets for £9.99. Sorry if anyone else has put this onsite, but not had time to catch up yet ! Got water bill this week and it's actually gone DOWN !!!! Not by much, but it is a start. Thanks to everyone for the great ideas on this thread.
