It was about 60 quid to get the chimneys swept, that was a few years ago.
i have fireplaces in both front rooms and main bedrooms but only had the front rooms done. also he had to use extra long brush poles as the house is v tall;)

I read my electric meter for the 1st time in yonks yesterday:o as I got an estimated bill and wanted to know what the real reading was - it was under the estimate.:T

Stupidly it had not occurred to me to do a daily meter reading to make sure I am reducing costs.

Dh and myself are having a debate:
he thinks its cheaper to heat the water and keep it on all day 6a.m to 8pm ( his argument is it will cost more to heat from cold each time rather than just topping up)
I think it would be cheaper to heat for 2 hrs in the morning and 2hrs in the evening
    who is right?

You're right, he's wrong... :D there are loads of posts on this on quite a few threads - so if you hunt around you'll find plenty of evidence for him.

Depending on how many of you there are in the house, and how much water you use, you should be able to cut down to one hour in the morning and one in the evening. I don't put mine on in the mornings during the week, as there are perfectly good showers at the gym, and it provides an incentive to get value for money out of the gym membership ;)

As far as heating the water from cold goes - even if you use ALL the water you heated in the morning, the stuff coming in from the mains will have warmed up to the ambient temperature of the house before it heats up in the evening, and the same again overnight. As it will be coming in to the warm tank, it will probably be reasonably warm, given that the tank can hold the heat effectively for 12 hours if it is properly lagged.

One way to test is to read your meter for a week one way and then a week the other - it should be obvious. And as he's a bloke, clearly you're right anyway  maybe he'll finally work it out!

Why two hours? We are a family of six and managed daily baths and showers on less than half that.

Hi, just have a quick question for you,

Am I right in thinking 4 spotlights take up a lot of electricity, one of my electricity bills for one month last winter was £100, and thats all I can think could have contributed to it, as we have them on constant.

    Thanks

I don't think they'll have used £100, but they certainly won't have helped. You need to do the maths to work out how much they use, then how much they cost. But it would certainly be worth switching them off when possible, and when they go, replacing them with something more efficient.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it to heat.
I've had mine hanging outside for a month now, biggest waste of money ever.
I don't know what I was thinking when I bought it.
Still it's handy for watering the toms
