there have been some posts on this thread about the dangers of these heaters. They can give out carbon monoxide, which is a silent killer and it starts by making you sleepy. The heater needs a very good supply of fresh air so it really defeats the object.

Also they give off a lot of water vapour and this will settle on the walls etc so likely to cause mould which can cause beathing difficulties like asthma

I use my pressure cooker and it saves having to use several saucepans on the go and the food is cooked in a fraction of the normal time.

Must agree, only to be used as last resort

Very useful to hear all opinions about the calor gas heater - I will not buy one and have already saved myself wasting £100 just for the heater. Thanks all.

Just checked it out - flummoxed me a bit to start with - as they've changed things. I clicked on "store" on the list of links on the left-hand side of the page I first came to - and up came the Pedlars Wagon bit. Leetle confusing - as Pedlars Wagon didnt come up on the search facility.

But - yep - I got into the "store" by clicking on that link.

My experience of these things was that I could always smell fumes from them and that they left a very unpleasant taste in the mouth. I wasn't very impressed with the heat given off either.

Have you thought about one of those oscillating halogen heaters? Not sure how they work out cost-wise though.

The halogen heaters are very cost effective and safe to use. We have one, it has 3 zones, 400w, each zone, so you can have 400, 800 or 1200w. I have only ever used the one zone, it gives out plenty heat, but it is a very bright light.
Edit; forgot to say, I got mine in Poundstretchers and I'm sure it was a lot less than a tenner.

For anyone looking for Garden Solar Lights - our 99p Store has lots of single lights at the moment - I got 2 last week, although we ain't had much sun to top 'em up with this week, also got wind-up torch in Wilko's £3.99. Argos wanted £14.99 !!!!! Great idea abouth the tension rods for drying clothes - will have to checkout prices for them. This thread is such fun & sooooo many good ideas - am determined bills are going to have to come down one way or another !

Smart meter eh. Ummmm.....correct me if I'm wrong - but aint that a type of meter where the fuel company (?) can tell from afar via their computers how much the consumer is using at that exact second (ie get a good idea over time of when one is in or out, etc). So - if someone could enlighten me before I decide whether to have one or no come the chance. Got an idea they can - so my decision was NOT to do so.

(Just trying to resist the creeping tendency in our society these days for everyone else to know what you're doing all the time - reminds me: must go off and read that Guardian article in more detail about the spy planes our own Govt plans on having making regular flights over Britain soon - what was the excuse again? Oh - I know - terrorists again - that one.)
