Catrin - I don't know whether the pre-paid meter was put in by your landlord if you're in rented accommodation. If so, it may be worth having a word with them to explain how difficult it is becoming to pay for your fuel and to see whether any changes are possible. The only other option I can see is to get some alternative means of heating which bypasses the meter such as using portable calor gas heaters but this does lumber you with the problem of having to lug the gas cylinders which is not easy.

We've had calor gas heaters in the past and they were more expensive to run compared to central heating. Don't know if that's still the case. The worst thing about them was the condensation they caused.

well i think ive found out what hiked my bills up.

we are on capped with scottish power the monthly dd used to be £85 then in may we got a letter saying we were using more than they'd accounted for so the monthly dd was going up to £111. couldn't think why it had gone up by so much and recently have been obsessivley turning off lights and making sure nothing is left on standby. The only leccy item weve chaged is i won a kettle that is an urn type thing designed really for office use, it boils the water then ticks over to leave it at a constant heat so you can make a drink anytime. recently ive taken to turning it off at night but thanks to a brilliant table someone posted on the other thread that was moved to the utilities board ive found out this is costing me £1.40 a day so leaving it on 24/7 would run up a usage cost of over £500 a year:eek: . I never even dreamed it would be anything like that, i will be investing in a new kettle PDQ hopefully with the other tightening ups i've been doing by the next 3 month assessment the monthly dd should come back down.

its well worth checking out the conversion chart posted in there if you havent already. all you have to do is put the wattage of the item and the price you pay and it tells you what its costing you to run it. THank you to the OP :T

I had one of those 25 years ago, Given to me when my washing machine stopped working and I couldn't afford another one.

It worked ok for things you would put in a quick wash, but for my toddlers clothes hand scrubbing in the sink was more effective.
They might have improved over the years but I doubt it.

Hand operated turned washing gadget - I had same experience, about 1972.

Ha just come up with a new one! Wash your smalls in your bath or shower and spin them in an old salad spinner (these seem to multiply and end up in numerous boot fairs), then let them dry off on one of those mini round peggy things in the bathroom.

Got to save a bit on money don't you think??:D

Sorry if a duplicate idea - but this is a mighty long thread!!!

I am so glad to read this, as I have been toying with the idea of buying one of these heaters for the last few days. Can you tell me how long approx one of those gas bottles would last say on medium heat (in hours) - and also are they easy to get hold of. Do you buy them in a shop or have to have them delivered. So many questions sorry.

Also are they heavy for a woman (fairly strong) to carry?
