I'm going to be thick now, but white vinegar instead of fabric conditioner?! Do clothes come out soft and smelling nice??

I use half soda crystals and half powder, makes washing powder go further and anything white on your clothes stays really white :j

It works by countering the hardness of your water. A lot of the time it's calcium/limescale deposits that make clothes all stiff and nasty when they come out of the wash.

I also read the other day it can make your towels more absorbent than using fabric softener because over time softener build-up coats the fibres of the towel and sort of seals them from absorbing moisture properly.

Oh soda crystals! Genius. I use them for loads of things but it has never occurred to me to try them on my stinky washing machine. I do use 30 degrees wash whenever possible as I am really not going to pay Npower any more money than I have to for electricity, so that must be where the minging grey gunk in the door seal has come from. Definitely going to try & bust it with soda crystals this weekend!

You can buy Tablets to put in each wash that help cleap the interior of the washing machine clean.

Also where you put the conditioner in, that can sometimes get stale and mouldy, take all the tray out and give it a good clean.
  • It might but I'd try slinging some vinegar in a cold wash-cycle. Is the machine's pump draining the water OK as the laundry really shouldn't smell stale after being in the machine only overnight

    Don't put bleach in

First take out the drawer and give it a good clean, then empty and clean out the filter.

Then run the machine on its hottest wash, empty, with a couple of spoonfuls of soda crystals in the detergent drawer, a couple in the drum, and vinegar in the fabric conditioner drawer.

The soda crystals will de-grease and the vinegar will descale.

If your WM drains via the sink, it's probably worth filling the sink with hot water and soda crystals and emptying it as the WM empties, to make sure that the pipes are cleared, as otherwise gunk can move around between the two.

    Hello.
    1. Washing machine at 90 degrees, with washing powder in the drawer. This is enough to give the machine a good clean.
    2. Always leave the door and drawer ajar after use, it lets air in to dry the machine.
    3. Do you have a machine with a timer? Leaving clothes washed overnight in the machine will make them smell. It happens. Put the washing to come ready for when you get up, if possible. Aternatively, put a timer device ( like for table-lamps) on the washing machine socket, so that it switches itself on at the right time.

    Hope this helps.

Mine used to smell all the time, I did run a short wash with bleach in which helped but now I make sure I leave the door wide open as often as possible and always leave the door open a bit if it's in the way open wide as washing machine in kitchen. Must be working as never smells anymore. I do use it every night for a load so not left empty for long!
There is no issue so small that it can't be blown out of proportion

I would check to see if the outlet tube is sitting in the waste pipe properly.

It is possible that it is the drains you can smell.

It all depends on what arrangement you have.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

    Hi cookingmama,

The replies on this thread should help too:

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.
