The last time that happened to me it was actually burnt rubber, something inside it's workings had gone badly wrong and the whole wash stank! It was on it's last legs anyway so I just got a new one. What exactly does it smell of? Mould or the smell of dirty washing sludge would be totally different to the burnt smell mine had.

defo doesn't smell of rubber- difficult to describe- mouldy/stagnant water??
  • I had this problem a few weeks ago after using laundry liquid for a some weeks. I found that I'd got a big build up of grey muck (yuck) in the trap and the rubber door seal. I clean that out with a cloth getting into all the folds and then used a tablespoonful of soda crystals in with washing powder from then on. I switched to powder after advice on this board (thanks), no more stinky machine and no more grey yuck!

I was always told that the best thing to do is run the machine empty once a month on a boil wash with nothing in the drum and use biological soap powder. I also add a scoop of soda crystals too.

Laundry liquid is often the culprit with smelly machines, bio powder is apparently the best.

soda crystals are great, l've been using a spoonful since l've had this machine and in two years still haven't got a build up of the gooey grey stuff in the seal.

You need to run the machine on some higher temperature washes to stop the smell and try leaving the powder drawer open between washes, hope that helps

    Happy moneysaving all.
  • Ditto - I had same probs so googled and came accross idea to use 1 cup baking powder / bicarb of soda and two cups of white vinegar or lemon juice.

I used baking powder & lemon juice - put it in the drum and ran a hot wash. Since then have left door open and there is no smell at all. Defo recommend it - saved me having to take everything to bits to try and sort it!

Hi, would recommend a small amount of bleach and washing powder on a (empty) boil wash every now and then to keep everything clean. I'm assuming you've unclogged the filter and there isn't a problem with your pump (the washing is being spun efficiently). Its probably a build up of gunge along the tubes somewhere.

If you use bleach though I always do a white wash after incase there is any bleach left in the machine.
  • Vinegar in the cycle will sort everything out! Also, where I used to work, a miele man used to come maintain the washer and he said that soda crystals will sort out all the limescale/smell build ups.
  • We used to have the same problems. We found the tube at the back of the machine that takes water away was blocked with hardened soap residue. We bashed it and bent it until the residue started to come away. It came out in pieces shaped like the concertinad tube.

Since then, and following advice from MSE I use 1 tablet (or half the recommended powder dose) plus two tablespoons of soda crystals and use white vinegar instead of fabric conditioner. I never bother with the maintenance wash now and not had a problem since. I keep wiping round the door seal which used to be forever gunged up, but there's never anything there now.
