There`s an older thread here which i found ages ago when i had the same problem

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=80598&highlight=smelly+washing+machine

I read it through and came to the same conclusion as others on this thread and started using soda crystals in the wash and half the amount of powder, i also switched to vinegar instead of fabric conditioner and a few months ago i started using plain old brown vinegar instead of the clear type even with whites.
I`ve never had a problem since and the hottest wash that i do is 40 degrees for the whites.

I put a couple of tablespoons of soda crysals in where the powder goes and I would just fill up the little fabric softener compartment with vinegar. When you've done the empty hot wash, give it an extra rinse afterwards to wash away any gunk that may have been dislodged. :o

If you have the old-type soda crystals which are like rocks you can put them in a jug with a little boiling water to soften then pour that into the machine.

I've had that problem in the past and a washing machine engineer told me that as so many of us use lower temperature, bacteria breeds in the water that is left in the bottom of the machine so we really need to use a hot wash every month or so to kill it off.

Another problem can be the filter - forhetting to clean it out regularly.

I wsh my bedlinen at 60 degrees and use vinager and soda and haven't had the problem for a while. :)
  • I've just seen Dri-Pak have got a new post on their blog about smelly washing machines. Might be worth a look as they make Soda Crystals!

Yes, that was my first thought. If there is a problem with the pump it may make a lound noise whilst draining, or the clothes will come out of the machine not as dry as usual, like it hasn't spun properly and there will be a musty smell from both the clothes and machine.

I'm going to be thick now, but white vinegar instead of fabric conditioner?! Do clothes come out soft and smelling nice??

I use half soda crystals and half powder, makes washing powder go further and anything white on your clothes stays really white :j

    Happy moneysaving all.

People on here swear by white vinegar as a fabric conditioner and who am I to say different - but..... I had complaints from my family about their clothes smelling of vinegar (and I only used a small capful). I had to stop using it!

Pour half a bottle of vinegar straight into the drum and a scoop full of soda crystals into the drawer - and then put the machine on the hottest wash you can, with nothing in the machine, apart from maybe some cleaning rags.

It should work - it did for me xx
