I'd buy a Skoda Octavia VRS 2.0 TDI 170 for £15900 (via Drive the Deal).

How much is an equivelant 1er (with discount) ?

There isn't an equivalent 1 series because the Skoda is based on an old VAG chassis from a few generations ago - its old tech and inferior despite what many Skoda fanatics say.

It's based on the same platform as the MK5 Golf, which the MK6 Golf is also based on.

... and has the new Common Rail engine, rather than the old PD engine still in some VAG cars.

Yes but the Skoda is more comparable to the mk5 golf rather than the mk6 so in that respect it is one generation behind. For example, the MK6 golf has the same chassis as the MK5 but VW have improved the manufacturing techniques and added additional stiffening over the MK5 chassis.

I've driven quite a few Skodas and there is no doubt in my mind that Skoda is definitely not a premium brand, the Skoda definitely feels cheaper - so its pointless trying to compare the prices of a non premium brand car like a Skoda with a premium brand car like a BMW - its like comparing apples and pears.

The point still stands that by "old VAG chassis from a few generations ago" you implied that it runs on something built at the same time as the MK4 Golf if not older - and it's not.

Plus the point in my comparison wasn't to compare "premium" brands it was to state the fact that with a £20k budget to spend on a hatchback I wouldn't be fooled by the "premium" 1 series.

Heh, only an Audi would tempt me into selling my bmw so what does that say about me!

I love the bmw driver stereotypes because being such an easy going, polite, well rounded individual I dispell all the myths.

You get a lot of weird reactions from people when you say you drive a bmw, or maybe thats because Im relatively young.

But really to me its just a car. I dont associate it will any kind of prestige or anything... its just a car... but 9 times out of 10 people instantly assume you think you are something special for driving a bmw.. which is just silly.

I totally agree. Pretty much any make of car you buy will come with a negative (and often unfounded) streotype attached to it so its pointless worrying about it.
