Sitting in traffic this morning, Listening to the radio one person said bmw drivers are the worst then another said no its audi drivers now, As i look to my left there is a big audi with the driver merrily tapping away on his phone, Then starts to make a call.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

That all hinges from Clarkson and he said about audi drivers being cocks.
The rest of us who arent sheep following the rest of the flock know you get !!!!! in all sorts of cars.0 -
And instead you would buy a focus? golf?
Thats the sort of money you're talking for a mid range model in those cars too.
For the record, the 1 series range starts at £17495 for a 121 BHP 2.0 litre 1 series Sport. Compare that to a focus pricelist and tell me what it buys you?
I'd buy a Skoda Octavia VRS 2.0 TDI 170 for £15900 (via Drive the Deal).
How much is an equivelant 1er (with discount) ?0 -

That would be your perrogative to do so.
It would be unlikely you would get a comparative price between a premium brand and a budget brand though - thats not how it works0 -

Fair enough, but the 1 series is a complete rip off - I would rather buy a used 3 series if I was going "premium"0 -

In fairness its not the strongest model in the range, nor the prettiest.
It seems to sell well enough though, so there must be some appeal.
Yes, i'd prefer a used 3 series myself - or a 5.0 -

BMW themselves said that the vast majority of 1 series drivers didn't know and probably didn't care that their 1er was a rear wheel drive car and is the reason why BMW is now going forward with a FWD car.
The appeal is the badge. You could attach the badge to a turd (like the X1, X3 and X6) to prove that the badge sells. The man without a signature.0 -

Hmmm....
I think thats a very one dimensional view.
To say simply 'the appeal is the badge' doesnt do the brand justice. OK the range isnt perfect, but they are often leagues ahead of their rivals. They practically invented the upmarket SUV range with the original X5, the M cars are superb. The 3 series is a class leader, their engines are leagues ahead with the power / performance offerings, their diesels are amazing, their straight sixes are creamy smooth and powerful - i could go on, but i'm sure you get the point.
I dont think it particularly matters what end does the driving on the lower performance cars, and i dont think you should read into BMW's decision as evidence that people 'just buy the badge'.0 -

I think you summed it up perfectly there. The 3 is the best premium compact executive car and holds up well against the newer C-Class despite its age. The X5 was the one I deliberately left out of my mediocre rating of the other X models. The 5 is good and the 7 underrated.
My beef with the 1 is that it is cheap and nasty for a BMW, cramped and has awkward styling. The fact that it is a RWD car should be a bonus, but the fact that most drivers don't know or don't care that it is RWD sums up the fact that people buy the car for the badge or perceived kudos. The man without a signature.0 -
