  • PS: One thing that hasn't been mentioned with regards to prepaid cards etc is that income from cashback sites and cards is declarable to HMRC, whereas a discount off a bill isn't. So depending on what rate of tax you pay, you would have to weigh in 20/40% of your cashback from other sources whereas as discount on a bill you wouldnt have to. Just an aside so don't please all jump on me (I bring it up as someone I know got done by HMRC for his use of the topcashback site).

But Tax is not payable by ordinary retail customers on cashback.

"In general, ordinary retail customers purchasing goods, investments or services at arm's length will not be liable to income or capital gains tax in respect of any commission, discounts or cashbacks received by them. For example, an ordinary retail customer who, when purchasing a car, negotiates to receive part of the commission earned on the sale by the salesperson will not be liable to income or capital gains tax in respect of that commission."

but in those 3 cases is there a way to get a better deal in their pocket can someone tell me?

Yes as far as case no 2 is concerned how about.

    T-Mobile Sim Only 30 day Contract 100 x net minutes . 100 texts. Unlimited Landline Call Booster. £10 a month (£5 in month 1)

    http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/sim-only/sim-only-10-30day/extras/

Unlike with UW the inclusive landline calls are not subject to a maximum duration of 15 minutes per call, their is no membership fee,and no admin fee of £25 if you want to port your number away.

I will leave our resident energy/cashback experts to answer points 1&2.:D

It's those sorts of people I believe that UW are a good deal for (along with people who dont use their home phone, stand alone line rental isnt too bad).

UW monthly line rental £10.75 + Membership Fee £1.50+ £1 Surcharge for low users = £13.25 a month.

BT monthly line rental £12.04 with paper free billing ,and their are of course cheaper line rental suppliers then BT,and BT dont charge for caller display where as UW would charge £1.50 amonth extra if you wanted it.
Its also worth noting that if UW install a new line/new number (12 month contract) , and it is connected to an LLU exchange, then unlike BT and some others UW will not allow you to transfer your line to another supplier.
  • Thanks ypaymore, that's great!! Especially about topcashback etc and tmobile i'll look into that save me a couple of quid!

Sorry I should have been clearer and said that line rental stand alone is good value as a way of getting the cvashback card, so yes you're paying a little more once you take into account membership fee etc but it's a good access way of getting the card. Although he appears stubborn and wrong about some things, Quentin is right that you dont need to take 4 possibly expensive services just to save a few quid cashback. Hope that makes sense!

You don't need to have anything to do with uw if you want to get the same (or better) discounts offered by the risky uw cashbackcard, by going elsewhere, as has already been discussed in this thread!

And you get the discount for yourself to spend on what you like!

If you go for BT Line rental saver and pay 12 months up front you only pay £9.99 equivalent /month.

I can't find an in-store cashback card for M&S and Mothercare anywhere, it's a long thread and I might have missed it though! Many thanks :)
