Hmmm - Certainly not a fan of UW, but to recruit 100's of no wage, commision only salesmen/women pushing UW onto family & friends, shows that the owners aren't daft, and unlikely to process Court Claims they can't win.
So if they are going down the 'Want deposit now road', it's likely that the T&C's that the customer signed, allow them to - Read the small print?
I've just looked at their T&Cs, Gas & Electricity 5h covers them being able to ask for a security deposit.

Hello! New to the forum because after watching this week's Money Saving tv program with Martin, I was surprised he did not mention the Utility Warehouse for cheaper energy bills - Any reason why? Does anyone know?

I have been a customer of Utility Warehouse since moving into rented accommodation 3 years ago and my annual Electricity and Gas bill is about £830 !!! This is much cheaper than most of the saving deals that Martin mentioned. ONE HINT - with the Utility Warehouse I have found the best way to keep the price low is simply to make sure I read our meters at end of every month without fail, I then can send my readings to them by email or mobile phone and by doing this my bills are kept even cheaper. Less than £30 per month in cheapest months - it's a WIN / WIN situation! But take care NOT to be talked into multi-package deals that include CashBack cards and mobile phone & Internet as these are where the costs can catch you out! Stick to Gas & Electrics ONLY.

Giving an annual amount you spend is a red herring when comparing.

You need to look at your annual energy use which should be easy for you to calculate given that you give a reading every month.

Ensure you select options to show a tariff comparison based on your current UW tariff (rather than assuming a standard tariff when a fix ends). Then compare.

People often get misdirected by the DD cost per month.

What is important is that you compare using KWH.

If utility warehouse still comes up cheapest, then great, if not, switch.

Utility warehouse tariffs still come up on comparison sites just like any other. But, I have have not seen a competitive tariff in my area from them in a long time.

Out of interest, what are your unit rates and standing charges?

When did you last check it was competitive?

Perhaps because they were not the cheapest? If they were, they would be top of the comparison site you use.

In my situation, according to EHL, their cheapest dual fuel tariff would cost me 39% more than I currently pay!

And it says to be eligible for this tariff, I would also need to be taking Home Phone, Broadband and Mobile services at a minimum cost of £29.39 per month

If I were to follow your advice and avoid the other services, and so only take gas & electric , then on their cheapest traiff that would cost almost 50% more than I currently pay !

Some company are not on the compares websites..
Scottish power fixed rate online was the cheapest for me, 50 pound a month, with the feeling off , no skimping on the heating.

    Welcome to the forum.

Like most first time posters touting UW(are you one of the 30,000 distributers by any chance?) your post is a nonsense I am afraid.

UW have one of the most expensive gas and electricity tariffs in UK. Go to ANY comparison website and compare prices.

If you care to post your kWh consumption(and district) for your UW annual bill of £830 I guarantee that we can find dozens of tariffs way cheaper.

Compared with my present Tariff UW are hundreds of pounds more expensive indeed well over 40% more expensive.

So rather than a WIN/WIN situation it is a LOSE/LOSE situation with UW

Reading energy meters once a month (or even once per day) will not reduce bills. Cost is based on tariff and usage, not how often a meter is read. Providing all suppliers with frequent actual meter meter readings will though ensure accurate billing rather than supplier estimates. UW would not appear on any of my supplier short lists; then again, neither would most of ML's recommended suppliers. I move where the lowest prices take me.

In last 2 months, the experience I have with UW on switching phone+broadband from one home to another has been extremly stressfull. I consider myself with good patience, however the utter disfunctional and ambiguous ways of desling with customers left me not only upset but with strong agitation and anger. To this day, i cannot even browse my internet, thereforr writing from my mobile internet providee by other supplier (thankfully). Despite , me and wife phoned them, written emails and posted messages in their "contact us" page several times, we do not get call backs. And even though, they claim to sort out the line problem, it works for couple of days and then goes on and off again. I work from home, my work life has been seriously disturbed by this experience.

On top, they charge amounts of cash back cards and bill protection fee without giving you chance to opt in, and without any prior information. I found out in my bill when i checked it. There is no advance information whatsoever. They way of customer dealing is quite rogue. I do not normally write such feedbacks, however i have given up after several attempts of dealing with them. On top, i have no contract with them, and informing them to exit at year end ( i started in Nov 2010 and now ending in Nov 2016), after 6 years of my customership, they still want to charge me £40 for termination fee which they never informed me before. They are pretty hardskin. In my previous home they were ok, even then i have deal with them number of times, but as I said , I consider myself a patient person...this time it is too much. They have crossed lines of making customer deathly frustrated.
