That's pretty much it. It was either pay the deposit, establish a DD, or they'd fit a ppm for gas if they didn't hear back.
While I sympathise with your predicament, UW did have problems mainly from the rented private sector with tenants flitting and not paying their bills. As a consequence, the company decided to be very strict on who we can sign up as club members.
So, while I understand your feelings in having to pay a deposit, I also understand why they have asked for it.
UW had a similar problem some years ago over mobile phones.
It's the same old story, bad customers always cause problems for good customers.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, companies like BT and BG still have a lot of customers so can afford to incur problems like this. UW cannot. It not only affects the company it affects distributors and club members alike.
I hope this helps to explain. The company should give you back the deposit. If you are waiting for it get the person who introduced you to contact UW on your behalf. That's their job after all. Generally, a HO won't deal with IDs if there is a bill problem (private info and all that) but I have sorted out things in the past for customers so give them a call.0 -
All makes sense now, thanks for clearing it up.
For the record, I would expect to have to prompt them for the repayment of the deposit funds and not leave it to happen automatically. Nothing to do with UW, I'd suggest that for any company who owe you money. I only asked here as to whether it was standard for them to just reimburse automatically and the time frame, or whether they usually required prompting.
It seems they keep any deposits until you ask for them. All covered by their ts + cs. Trouble is for energy accounts you have to go to page 21 to discover this!
It appears none of the reps have got that far reading their own ts + cs as none have referred to it!0 -

Thanks. I agree, just otherwise I tend to forget to chase things up for ages. I've emailed them via their website for details - sends me to a distributor's website rather than CS department - so I shall wait and see.0 -

Do you not know the name of the distributor who introduced you? They should have left you their contact number. Generally UW are pretty good at paying you back, normally on your bill. So it is best to keep an eye on your bills.0 -

Thanks.
They were the extant supplier when I moved into the place; not heard of them before I moved in and at first glance they seemed a bit of a 'marmite' company with people online.
Must admit, I've not had a problem with UW and have been happy with their service and getting in touch with them, it's just the new provider is cheaper and has higher customer satisfaction rating.
Just got an email back with advice on who to contact, so unless I have any probs getting the money refunded I'll have nothing bad to say about my experience with UW.0 -

Great to hear you are being sorted at last. I understand how it has happened. My son is a customer of mine down in Guildford. He moved into new digs in September when he returned to Uni. The energy is still provided to the new people unless they decide to switch as you have done. As the move in and move out was smooth, there wouldn't be a problem. It seems that the new people have decided to remain with UW and me. So I have kept a customer without having to do anything.
There are a few people who visit here regularly with just one purpose. I think you have realised who they are. Do take a look at what UW can offer you later when you have settled into your new house. If you need advice just pm any of the UW IDs on here. I don't comment that often now as it became rather stressful and I have better things to do like building my UW business. It's open to anyone - yourself included if that is of interest. But you know yourself best. Good luck.

Can you all keep it friendly please?
As someone's said, the ignore facility can be very useful.
ThanksCould you do with a Money Makeover?

If we ignore C & Q, they can post whatever they like unchecked, filling the heads of more people with their propaganda and half-truths (and sometimes plain untruths!). Nobody from the moderation team ever asks them to clarify their words or provide any evidence to back up what they say, so if we put them on ignore, they can comment without anyone being able to refute their variously spurious statements.
I am saddened that the forum mod team would advocate this one-sided approach.I am an Independent Financial AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as an Independent Financial Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. I totally agree with you Meeper and have sent a private message to the moderator. While I can't be bothered arguing the toss with the likes of Quentin any longer, people visiting this site want answers to their particular situations. People like him / her and the other individual calling himself Cardew have no interest whatsoever in helping to solve queries. Rather they are both just mischief makers of the first order.
