As Martin says - please be nice - there is no such thing as a stupid question ! ;)
  • Whenever I tried offering up old working printers or surplus chairs, tables, etc, moderators take down my offers because I was willing to deliver to 30 mile radius if required.

I gave some toot away to a couple of wanted ads, but the amount of people who say they'll be there at one time, and never turn up, cheesed me off.

So I don't bother. Just accumulating more junk to use as chicken shelters / bonfire wood, etc.

I don't like seeing ads wanting pets or offering pets, someones just asked for

'new healthy kittens for a loving home approx 8 to 12weeks. Please email pics, hope someone can help thanks'

new as opposed to used ? Why not go to the local shelter where they'll be inunndated with 'new' cats?
  • I have given some good quality items away on freecycle - and agree with some of these comments. Some people are genuine but I often have the same people emailing me within minutes of the add being put on there asking for the items. Infact I am 99% sure that one of them owns a local 2nd hand shop in the village. I tend to pick out the most genuine sounding person with the hope that they do need the bits opposed to some greedy sod who is trying to make a fast buck out of my kindness.

Speaking as a list owner - freecycle has one core purpose only. Keeping items out of landfill. Some lists will broaden this slightly but it doesn't change the core founding principal. List owners have some discretion on what they allow but it really is just detail.

No moral judgements, no ban on making money, no giving to a worthy cause - just reduce the number of perfectly good items that are needlessly thrown into landfill which costs us all.

Re-use is far more "green" than "recycle"

Once this is appreciated it becomes much more simple - you are giving away something that you no longer want; something that you would normally take to the dump. What happens to it subsequently is irrelevent, the alternative is it is buried under a mound of other rubbish clogging up our planet.

Why is someone being greedy asking for something you are offering for free? If they can be bothered to sell an item when you can't who are you to judge? Why this assumption that everyone should be so grateful of your charity? It a wee bit self important isn't it.

Personally if I give something away I don't really care who gets it as long as it gets taken.

If I offer something then I do so in the hope that it goes to someone who is deserving of it and not someone who is going to stick it on ebay or drag it to the next carboot to make a few quid. I prefer the recipient to be taking the items for their own use, because if I wanted something to be sold then I could do that myself.
'Greedy' is asking for everything and anything to sell on and pocket the cash after giving the impression that they are desperately in need of something, and causing someone who is in genuine need to miss out.

Fair enough but you are projecting your own charitable desires onto Freecycle. Please don't blame Freecycle for this - you are trying to make it something it isn't.

Sellling it yourself and giving the money to charity or donating it to the charity shop of your choice would seem more appropriate for you than Freeecycle.

Frankly I am just pleased when my stuff gets collected, I don't really care what people do with it. I have even offerd items before as suitable for a car boot to try and get some interest.

I have read this thread with interest.

I agree with the poster above in that I dont really care what happens to something once someone has collected it from me, but the minimum I expect when giving something to someone FOR FREE is that they are polite, collect the item on time and dont tell lies to get it! If someone got in touch and said they have a second hand shop or an ebay it wouldnt make the slightest bit of difference to me - if they can be bothered with the hassle of that good for them, but please dont insult me by telling me that my brand new DVD player is for a dying and bedbound grandmother who can no longer get downstairs to watch TV (yes really) when i then see it advertised in our local shop window for sale 3 days later!!!!
