Perhaps we don't need to bother with Freecycle/Freegle?
Give it to charity instead unless it is junk!0 -
Today I offered a fruit machine which just needed a bit of attention as one of the reels need re-aligning. Straight away I received:
"Hi could i have it? and how did you get ownership? i dont want a knicked on, police trace them you know"
Unbelievable, does he really think he has a chance when he sends me a message accusing me of handling stolen goods:rotfl:
I looked on his history and surprise surprise, 2 years of "Wanteds" for Tv, Computers, Laptops, Xbox 360(must have all controllers, accessories and plenty of games!), PSPs etc etc...you get the picture.
I give up!

I don't have a car so people coming to collect items is a huge plus, especially when it's something large, my only other option is to have it taking up space until I have enough to justify a Council bulky waste collection (£23 up to 5 items). Which is pricey on my income.
So Freecycle/Freegle is a lifesaver!0 -
just posted in my local freecycle -
WANTED: ipad 1 or ipad 2 or ipad3 (newcastle)

Message from our main moderator today!Dear Freecycle members,
It is with glee that I am informing you all that I will be hanging up my lead moderator boots as quite honestly the amount of morons I have had to deal with is beyond stupid. Between the lady that emailed me saying that freecycle was crap because she never got anything she wanted, the bloke who thinks google are 'after' him, the lady that wanted to report a member to the police for not responding and the total pillock who reports that he makes between £1100 to £1300 pounds a month from selling other peoples stuff, quite honetly I cannot be bothered anymore. Most of you are decent, kind people but the rest are obviously missing more then grey cells. So good luck in your future freecycling and do be more careful who you give your old things to!
Laters BabyI say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.0 -
Classy exit!
I barely use freecycle these days. Mostly it goes to Charity shop or, if I think I can make a quid or two, Ebay/Gumtree etc.
I got frustrated with the demands for "bran new or working" high value electricals. I've seen those must-be-working posts for laptops, Iphones, LCD TVs, WIis, PS2s... you name it.
I don't actually have a problem with someone selling on freecycle aquisitions; after all, I reason if I can't be bothered to sell it and someone else can, all power to them for putting the effort in. But I do think when people lie about why they want things, that's a bit naughty. I suppose the onus is on the seller to decide if they want to seel it to them or not though. I would be miffed if Id been conned into giving something to an old man with a hobby instead of someone blatantly making a profit.
I posted this elsewhere (didn't realise there was a freecycle thread) but I once gave away an old leather sofa on freecycle. Some woman replied to say she wanted it, turned up with a strapping lad and stood there trying to decided if the colour would go with her decor, while I got increasingly annoyed. I mean, why say you want it and then um and ahh? It's free !!!!!!! eventually she decided it wasn't quite right and thus sated her and my time. I eventually shifted it to a couple of students for their digs, which was frankly what I was hoping would happen to it. These days I wait for the "I want it" emails to pour in before I decide who to offer to.
EDIT: I forgot to add, my local group have now said that we're not allowed to put the "sob story" of why we want something; we're only supposed to put that we want it and no details. This sort of helps take the emotional blackmail out of it but doesn't help if you genuinely want to give to someone more needy."So long and thanks for all the fish" :hello:0 -

The whole idea of freecycle is that its offered 'freely' but I do know what you mean, especially if you feel the item is worth something to you, but those offering and those recieving shouldnt exchange money, its not the 'ethos' of freecycle.
I have sometimes been 'given' a token 'thank you' for items I have given away, such as a jar of home made jam when i gave someone loads of jam jars, and once got half a dozen eggs as a think you for some toys and books.:)0 -
If people start giving presents for things received from Freegle, people will start expecting something and will choose the recipient who will give the best thank you present.
It's the first rule in our group - everything has to be FREE!
The best way to say thank you is to make a few offers if you can and strengthen the group so that other people can benefit.0 -

An email saying thank you will be a lot more than many give (in fact any thank you at all is).
ETA: I recall we gave away some toys to a couple once, we were very happy with an email from the collectors saying their daughter was having a great time playing with them there and then.Toyota - 'Always a better way', avoid buying Toyota.0
