From my understanding, the spirit of MSE is indeed to "grabbit"... Look at the way the Freegle/Freecycle article is written, about how to "bag freebies on giveaway sites".

I recently offered a brand new single mattress that I never got round to using, still in the plastic cover.

I was swamped with replies, the majority of which where outlandish sob stories or just plain rude, habitual snatchers.

I eventually gave it to a woman who I noticed had made lots of offers recently, which to me is more the spirit that should be seen on Freegle.

You reap what you sow and all that.

Thats the way I've always done it, I check what my asker has offered. Many times I've found the asker has posted nothing but wanted ads. I also leave decisions for 24 hours to give everyone a fair chance.

As for the smartphone debate, anyone bothered by this can remove the signature 'sent from my iphone' through settings > Mail > signature.

Ditto. Though I now know most of the names on our group who just take, take, take. And those who endlessly Want.

The area I live in is often called affluent. I'm not. Nor is anyone I know round here. But we have a close and fast moving FC community. My kids have used stuff that has passed through the hands of at least two Fc'ers before them, and the gubbins have been passed on again.

Taken me 15 months to find out how to remove the smartphone signature on my phone!

  • I love Freegle, but I don't understand why people don't turn up to collect the goods!

Anyway, I wanted a teasmade, but they are really expensive to buy. I put a wanted ad for teasmade, that same day I got a reply from someone who had one to go, they had got it from another freecycler who didn't use it.

The offer was 25 miles away so my daughter went to pick it up the same day. The couple who were giving it away were lovely, everything was going well when my daughter picked up and dropped the teapot that comes with it! The couple were aghast at this so my daughter left sharpish with the remaining teasmade thingy.

When she got it home we looked for instructions for this Teasmade and couldn't find any, but I ordered a new teapot from Amazon for £16. £16! I then tried to cancel the order but wasn't able to so along came my new shiny teapot.

I absolutely love my Teasmade, I've never tried it as an alarm but click it on in the morning (or whenever really) and in a really short time there is my tea made! :D

I have just scanned both of my local freecycle sites and looked at all the wanted posts.

WHY WHY WHY cant people say please or thanks. The number of wanted ads that dont say either thanks or please makes my blood boil. I would never give anything to anyone who did not say either please or thank you - maybe i am being over the top ! But i dont care politeness costs nothing.

A while back someone posted a wanted on behalf of a friend who had their bike stolen. Well we had an adult bike in the shed, in need of new inner tubes. So I contacted her and said she was welcome to it. Never heard anything back. I am still annoyed. A bike is quite an expensive item to ask for. Even if the answer was 'I'm sorry but she won't be able to afford the tubes' I would have understood, but nothing at all...

We had a kids' one as well so they went to a family in the end.

I got rid of a box of boot sale stuff today (not very MSE but I can't be bothered to do one and I need the space). Someone contacted me and said they were particularly interested in the crockery items  I didn't specifically say 'must all go as one' but it was only a couple of boxes, I wasn't expecting someone to try and cherry pick - not when they will be making money off it!
I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off :o

when i placed my offer for kitchen items which included literally everything you could imagine inc 2 nice vases. I had a lady saying she was interested in the crockery so I said it needs to go as one lot I dont want to be hassled with siefting through. So she took the lot kept what she wanted and gave the rest to a woman who had recently moved out of a refuge.
