I know this must have been asked before, but why have any 'wanted' posts at all?

Surely people can put things on that they want to get rid of and then they can respond to whoever they want.

I mean, if you have got a large flatscreen TV/latest mobile phone/ps3/car to get rid of you will put it on. Or do people see a wanted add for these and think 'oh yes', forgot I had one of these knocking around that I don't want!
I think people have plenty of things that they don't need just hanging around that they haven't got around to getting rid of yet.

Lets take a mobile phone for an example. Not the latest model, maybe, but an ok one.
You've got a working mobile phone but you think it's about time to get a new one (or you are due one on your overpriced contract).
So you get a new phone.
You keep your old one for now - what if I can't get along with my new one, etc? Put it in a drawer out of the way.
6 months later someone posts on Freegle wanting a mobile phone.
You've got one that you don't need now that you know you're happy with the new one.
That's one mobile phone (complete with coltan, if they still use that these days?) saved from landfill. Everyone wins.
By the time you would have got around to sorting out that drawer it may have been worthless to anyone.

Equally, wanteds work for the things that wouldn't normally get offered because no-one would expect anyone to want it.
E.g. I've just cut the grass. I would love for someone to come and pick up the garden waste.
I won't be listing it as I doubt anyone wants it.
So if there is someone out there who wants bags of cut grass then they won't know I've got any unless they put on a wanted.

In the second year of my Art degree I was focusing on collage, especially collage using old magazines. I put up a wanted for picture posts etc, basically any type of magazine featuring glamourous women. I was highly amused when a man got in touch with a huge pile of 60's and 70's !!!!!! magazines for me! He'd never have offered them and was just going to tip them so my wanted saved the whole pile, which I used (carefully!!)

He gave them to me in a large box thankfully :o OH and I had a laugh though flicking through them, razors were seemingly rare in the 60's and 70's :D
I did manage to use quite a few of them though, with discrete overlapping images so the whole things stayed within the realms of decency.

Just posted on our Freegle / Freecycle

"I'm after a little run about car for my wife, she is about to take driving lessons Also we are wanting to go camping and we need the tent two sleeping bags and equipment and lasty childrens clothes toys etc

thanks for your time and hope to hear from someone very soon"

Sometimes I think people want for to much ? - or is it just me getting old ?
    :)
Hmm I personally responded to one quite similar, basically asking for loads of kids toys etc, and since my babies have now grown into 9 and 10 year olds I saw no problem in giving away all their toys for free!, ok I paid for them at retail price, but my kids did get a good use out of them! And the person who came to get them got over 100 toys gadgets and dolls, their child's faces (*which they brought with them) were worth the whole lot!! It was like all their christmasses had come at once and they gave my 2 kids £20 each (which I didn't ask for) and they were in cloud 9!!.

Oh and I must admit I am too quick to bin things and since we only get fortnightly bin collections I had to cut down on binning when I found my 2 were too old, and I wouldn't bother trying to sell cause my kids are not the best at taking care of their things!
Need to get rid of my Yankee Candle Habit, Not very money saving of me :)

I don't think the children's toys were the issue for thepedestrian though.

you've summed up for me what freecycle is all about, with a lovely story. :j
Toyota - 'Always a better way', avoid buying Toyota.
  • indeed - a great story and a great result for all concerned - ( including the planet ! ) - just moved recently myself and freegled out what I could ,but some things just had to be taken to the City recycle centre , the amount of electrical goods and decent furniture being chucked was a real eye opener ( had to rescue a kitchen clock myself ,when no one was looking ! )

    - btw ,what do the lads at the centre do with all the stuff that they put to one side ??
As Martin says - please be nice - there is no such thing as a stupid question ! ;)
