Not only can you park opposite zig zags at a school, I dont believe theres anything in law to stop you parking ON them.
    Strange but true.

Assuming you're not being facetious you might want to read highway code, rule no 191

"You MUST NOT park on a crossing or in the area covered by the zig-zag lines. You MUST NOT overtake the moving vehicle nearest the crossing or the vehicle nearest the crossing which has stopped to give way to pedestrians.
    [Laws ZPPPCRGD regs 18, 20 & 24, RTRA sect 25(5) & TSRGD regs 10, 27 & 28]"

Don’t all the laws you have quoted apply to pedestrian crossings and not schools (unless there also happens to be a crossing there)

I thought school zig-zags were enforced by a specific Traffic Order which only applies at certain times and must have regulation signs detailing these times.

best not do this going past a school lest a startled driver lose control and mow down a bus queue of kids
Now don't be too hasty !

If I can pick and choose the kids to go into the queue, it would actually be a public service and could potentially save the country millions ;)

Nah, it’s a well know fact that any child killed by mobile using drivers or knife/gun wielding gangs is always either very gifted academically or a future world class sportsman.

Must be the patron saint of thick/wicked/normal kids keeps them away from car accidents and/or sharp things

When I checked the highway code it simply mentioned zig zags. It didn't differentiate between those at schools or those at crossings.
Logically, I would agree that at certain times, zig zags at schools are redundant and you could park there.
But I wouldn't want to argue the toss with a cop if I ended up with points on my licence! :)

It's not a crossing (although it may be used as a crossing point by a lollypop person).
With a little bit of research, parking CAN be restricted on them, but there must be signs stating when, and it is non endorsable (unlike failing to follow rule 191).
So rule 191 can be discounted totally.
http://www.thisisbristol.co.uk/news/Parents-stick-car-parking-rules-outside-Bristol-school/article-1870340-detail/article.html Heres one where a council has made no parking on them manditory instead of advisory. Traffic wardens can NOW fine people for doing it. (at some Bristol schools anyway).
So basically, sometimes you can be fined, sometimes you cant, but you can never be issued with penalty points.

When you say before the accident......... minutes? hours? days?

    Proof of this?

Glad to be of assistance ;)
The prominent Labour peer Lord Ahmed of Rotherham was jailed for 12 weeks today after admitting sending texts while driving shortly before his Jaguar ploughed into a stationary car on the M1, killing its driver.

He was sent straight to the cells from Sheffield crown court after a judge described his texting as "prolonged, deliberate, repeated and highly dangerous", even though it was not directly linked to the accident.
