Want an iPad? - My MSE thoughts...

Hi All,
I'm located in America and England so during my recent few months there, I decided to go ahead and purchase an iPad 32GB Wi-Fi for a cool $670, though this model will be even more expensive than the UK converted price here when it is released.
I'm sure many MSEers will be thinking - "Should I?" - And it's a good question.
So let me discuss where the iPad fits into my life. As a huge technical user I have a computer, 2 laptops, an iphone, blackberry and now the iPad. I use my main work laptop and my blackberry the most for work, and though the iPad can be used for work and is a great email device, a laptop is just more productive at doing work stuff.
So for work, I use my laptop. At home however, this is the big difference... Though for long MSE posts like this I'm using my laptop or would need the keyboard accessory for the iPad... However, the iPad is great for:
1) Email
2) Facebook
3) Skype
4) A photo device
5) A video player for trains, flights, bed, in the garden etc..
6) A general browsing internet device
7) Casual gaming and procrastonation
8) A music player
The iPad is all about comfort. I can't be bothered booting up my laptop when I'm on the couch and just want to check my email (on a screen bigger than by blackberry) or just want to chat to someone on facebook... So it's easy for me to just pick up my iPad and off I go in seconds....
The iPad is about speed and comfort of doing proper things on a bigger screen than the iPhone.
The other great advantage is you don't need to be an expert to use the iPad. I mean ok you have to Sync it with itunes but that's as tough as it gets.. The device is GREAT for computer users who aren't too technical as it's so easy to download an app, use the browser, and once the mail client is setup the whole thing is just simple and brilliant to use!
So I recommend this as a toy. A fantastic toy that makes computer use simpler and quicker. It won't be more productive than your laptop, and it wont give you more features than what your blackberry or iphone can already give really, but it's just nicer...
If you're saving money to get out of debt, don't fall for the marketing. If you have a computer, then you can do everything you can do on an iPad...
However, if you do have spare money and you do a lot of travelling, then it really for me is worth it... It cost a lot but my 13 hour flight went very quickly after putting a whole season of 24 on it

In summary, the iPad is fun. It's easy to use. Its full of features, and the battery live of well over the stated 10 hours is just incredible. But I can say this now, no one NEEDS this device, but we'll all WANT it. That's exactly why it's a toy... But an enjoyable one
So there's my thoughts as an iPad user - I hope this saves some people some money, or alternatively brings a lot of joy to those people who do decide they want one for the joys it can bring! I certainly love it and just turn the receipt face down for now..

Exactly right - I can now do work on the move using the iPad and its more efficient and better than getting out the laptop or using my iPhoone... but that is quite a niiche use of the device, and at home it's just a toy for fun [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

Ive been using it tonight for MSE surfing and facebook chat (I had to jailbreak it and download Backgrounder which allows apps to be run in the background...)
The second i got a work email which required work though, back to the laptop.

Just have one laying around the coffee table ready to be picked up. Nice to get them before my holiday next month too. Going on a cruise (and fully wireless) and would be a useful gadget for photos, email and reading for us both.0 -

But we do have to ask ourselves the usual question: Why, oh why, oh why is there no webcam? The next iPad ilk have a webcam I imagine. You know what apple are like. They'll hold back certain features for future models. I have an original iPhone but couldn't justify the extra cash in upgrading as didn't need gps. I may well get the new phone though...
And yes I'm really looking forward to OS 4. Being able to multiple task is Key for use by geeks such as me. For none literate tech users multiple tasking isn't an important feature but for me it is....
Lets be honest though, we do buy toys for ourselves and justify it. Or we buy things that look nice for a home like a more expensive painting or vase or something. The iPad does give you a lot of use when u wouldn't have previously done something, like checking email in bed. Of course theres the argument where in this day and age when we work too much is it a good thing to make work from casual places easier? I guess the wives would say no
