  • Hi.

I have received a call this morning from a company called electricity4business.

They are substantially cheaper than my current supplier powergen & from what they tell me I could save about £220 per year! (My last bill was £880 which has gone up by £300 per quarter!!! )

BUT, as with all these "cold" calls alarm bells are ringing as to how "genuine" this company is.

Can anyone tell me if they have heard of this company & if so are they any good? Also they want to cap the prices for 3 years. Is this a good idea?

    Any info greatly appreciated.
    Cheers.
  • When using the comparison websites bear in mind the additional discounts you can get.

    For instance:
nPower give £80 if you are a monthly direct debit, dual fuel customer (£20 for single fuel) which is credited to the account each 12 months. See here:
    http://www.npower.com/At_home/Electricity_and_gas/Prices_and_discounts/Discounts.html

When I did a comparison using energyhelpline.com it suggested I'd be £50 better off switching to British Gas dual fuel, or £66 going with single fuel suppliers (Atlantic for gas, British Gas for Electrickery). However once the £80 discount I get on my current tariff (nPower Juice) is factored in then I have the cheapest dual fuel tariff by £30 and am still cheaper by £14 than single fuel suppliers.

Plus, and for me this is a very big plus, nPower's Juice tariff has 100% GREEN electricity.

:money: When I compared the green tariffs, after factoring in the £80 discount then I'm a whopping £74 better off staying put.

It just goes to show, don't believe the comparison web sites give you the full picture.

Now if only nPower carbon offset Juice gas as well ... ;)

I thought all discounts were included on the comparison websites?
Edit: Just checked on energyhelpline and the £80 discount is included.
  • I used an MSE recommended comparison site to switch to nPower a couple of years ago. Now nPower have just released their newest offering, Sign OnLine v8 with paperless billing, and the MSE site suggests this may be the cheapest.

I visited the nPower site, but couldn't find any information to help me switch from my current Sign OnLine v.5 to v.8. I did manage to change to paperless billing, but nothing more.

So I emailed nPower and have just received the following reply:

    Good Afternoon Mr____________

    Thanks for your recent email.

I can confirm your tariff will not change because you have changed to paperless billing. You will continue to pay the current tariff you are already paying. There are no further discounts for using paperless billing.

We are not able to amend existing customers onto SOL8 tariff as this tariff is for new customers entering into a new supply contract at this time.

Trust this has explained things for you.

    Kind Regards

Well doesn't that just say it all!! Companies like nPower exploit the goodwill of the general public by supplying the same product at different prices. I was gullible enough to assume that my energy provider would treat me fairly even if they didn't reward my loyalty. It's a disgrace!

I replied to the email telling them that I will switch to Scottish Power immediately and save over £100 a year on my current agreement. If, however, after swapping, I find that nPower is cheaper, I will simply return and benefit from their "new customer" rates. What a ridiculous farce!
  • Well, by switching from nPower to Powergen's Staywarm, I'll be saving about £120 per annum. :j

Which is a fair few pints...

    Thanks, Martin. :money:

    Hi everyone

I have just bought my first property and would like to know what would be the best way to find the cheapest supplier for my gas and electricity.

    Cheers

go to energyhelpline.com, follow the prompts.

    nice & easy!

  • Dunno if this is of any use, but I was pleasantly surprised...

I was on BGs click energy 2 tariff, and moved house this month.

In transferring my account over to my new property, which they didn't previously supply, I found that I will receive a £40 account credit for staying with them!

Beat that for cashback. And cheap prices too.

I realised that other companies can offer slightly better prices, but the way BG award their discounts, i.e. throughout the year rather than (say) "after 12 months with us", it leaves you the flexibility to switch again if prices start changing again whilst still having received your discounts promised.

    Enjoy

    Friendly greeting!

I moved from BG 2 years ago to EDF online. Now that EDF have raised their V3 prices I find that BG, EDF, Powergen & Scottish Power are pretty much the same in terms of price. Npower is cheaper but as they don't do cashback it is not worth going with them.

The £60 BG cashback has me tempted I must admit.
