Why a DVD-RW? XP Pro should fit on to a CD.

Was concerned about compatibility with anything other than a standard CD

    Fixed Optical Drive
( one of the following: ) DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
    DVD-ROM Drive
    CD-ROM Drive

Newvertheless, there is no harm in trying.

    Hi Guys,

I'm back but still haven't got the laoptop working.

Donnie - tried copying that program I downloaded the other night using imgburn onto a cd-r, but still got the same message near the end saying that it was incompatible media.

Went to get the cd's with the op systems and programs on, have got an XP backup copy disc with XP on it. When I put it in my pc, it comes up asking if I want to install windows. When I put it in laptop, it doesn't.

There is a folder on the backup disc that is titled 'Bootdisc' - that contains files (6) entitled cdboot1.IMG through to cdboot6.IMG also makeboot.exe and makeboot32.exe, when I open the last two files, it says that the program will create the set up boot discs for XP SP2 and goes on to say it needs 6 floppies. I'm guessing that the other files - cdboot etc are copies of the floppies.

When I switch the laptop on, all I'm getting is a flashing cursor, although earlier, it was trying to load for 10 mins, before telling me there was no operating system on. I was told by an IT man from a company I work for, that I need to make a cd it will boot from, he said to do that using Nero, I've tryied, but can't seem to get the files onto cd.
Also, when I fire it up, I can't seem to get a Bios screen, even though I press F10 as soon as it powers up.
It just comes up COMPAQ, press F10 to change settings.

    Need help.

    TIA

I ought to have also said, that on this back up disc, there is setup.exe as well as folders such as cmpnents, DOCs, etc plus pictures of the front and back of the original box, complete with the activation code - it says it is the Gold reloaded edition.

On the picture of the box it said it was a bootable cd without using floppies, but I don't know what to copy on to a disc to make that bootable cd.

If it's a Bootable Disc, you have to place the disc in the laptop and then reboot. Hit enter when you see Boot from CD or follow the instruction from the Tech in order to boot from CD before the Hard Drive kicks in.

But be aware: Gold Reloaded Edition

Did you use the "write image file to disc" option in imgburn

Try pressing F12 at boot, but F10 should work if you hold it down when it says press F10.

Oh, good job I didn't get it loaded then.

There's also a 'Microsoft genuine windows XP pro Vista style', disc, but that ones probably dodgy too.

The files that were on the bootable disc are on this disc along with all the other files, eg, copy of the covers etc, so it wouldn't boot anyway.

Yes I did, but it said the copy wasn't complete and the other day when I tried to install it from the disc it had made, it got near theend then said the leptop didn't have a hard drive, which obviously it has, but I think it had failed to write the hard drive's drivers on to the image disc and so wasn't recognising the hard drive.
