  • Im now worried, we have just moved house and had recieved a letter addressed not to us or the last owner asking for £3k. We had left it in a junk mail pile, but decided to open it just incase.....

We got worried that they would send bailiffs round so I have just phoned them up to let them know there is nobody by that name at this address.... and gave them my name....

Have i done a silly thing??

Are they so dodgy as to now persue me???

    ?

    Thanks,

    Andy

I get the feeling I know what mine was for, a book club to which I settled the balance 4 years before they went bankrupt.

I saw a programme on television with others from the same book club that had also paid before the company went under and also received letters from debt collection agencies.

I did not contact the debt collectors, I didn't even return the letter, they can take me to a county court and if I am asked to produce evidence of payment to the said book club, I will tell them like I advise everyone else, when a document becomes 6 years and 1 day old, shred it.

I shred documents over 6 years old.

Should have either returned it as 'not known at this address'

Or maybe stuck it in the shredder.

If the bailiffs arrive, they will see you're not the person(s) they are after and then search for that person(s).
  • I RECIEVED A LETTER FROM THIS MOB TO WHICH I STUPIDLY REPLIED BY PHONING THEM.
1 ACCEPTED IT WAS MY DEBT AND COULD I PAY IT UP MONTHLY. THEY SAID NO AS IT WAS GOING TO COURT AT THE END OF FEB AS I ALREADY HAVE A CCJ AGAINST THE DEBT OF A STUDENT LOAN 15 YEARS AGO. THEY ACCEPTED MY CARD DETAILS AS TO PAY SOMETHING TOWARDS IT AND THEN SAID THEIR SYSTEM WAS NOT WORKING.
DO YOU THINK THEY CAN ENFORCE THIS DEBT AFTER ALL THIS TIME AS I AM BEGINNING TO GET WORRIED. DOES ANYBODY KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH THIS MOB.:confused::confused:

Try being honest with them and discussing your debts, what you earn and what you can afford to pay off and set up a DD and keep to it ?
  • not everybody is a lottery winner. i have read a few of your posts and i am starting to think you work for a debt collecting agency.:T
  • Why does working long hours and paying bills make me a lottery winner ?

Also why would the advice of making contact with the debt company, being honest with them about your means and agreeing how your going to pay off your debt and sticking to it, which you were clearly to stupid to understand or couldnt be arsed to follw hence the mess your in, how does this make me work for a debt collecting agency? Dont bother, it will only tire you out.
  • Hopefully you get tired of being SAD:money:
  • Well I am another poor sod who has had dealings with these people. Background, I owe 1800 on my student loan and for 4 years have been paying it off, currently paid 2500 and still owe 1800 when the original loan was 3000 so there doing well out of me. Got in financial difficulties 6 years ago when my partner died and I lost it for a bit and when I got straight again I faced my debts and in the past 4 years have managed to pay off 10. grand so I think its fair to say I am being honest.
The point. Student loans passed the debt to Mc Hall and they are nothing but a bunch of lieing intimadation specialists. First I was told my house would be taken away, the mortgage is my wifes not mine, then it was " Oh so your married, right we shall take her stuff as well" I slammed the phone down. Next it was " Oh we dont have to take you to court we can just come and take your belongings" then it was " what car do you drive?" Told em car is not mine its wifes and they say " We will have that then" and today it was " Student loans are goverment debts and so the rules are different" I dont need advice as I know the law, My point to all the people saying you have a responsibility to pay debts, well I am and this bunch are incredibly unpleasant and not helpful at all. I am paying what I owe, and more, so why should i be subjected to this level of harrasment. I had no wish to get into this position but you try nursing a partner you love and who you know is going to die and keep on top of the financial stuff. I know i made a mistake and I have put my hands up to sort it out when what I should have done was !!!!!! off to Australia.

Feel better now I have that off my mind. Thanks for reading

  • Hi Guys,
Can anyone help with me this?
I know I'm asking the same as a lot of people but I have a debt with these leeches which is dating back to Dec 02 for a home learning course that I sent back too late. They have been pestering me on and off for nearly 6 years and have gradually reduced the debt but I refuse to pay for something that I dont even have. When I ordered the course the girl on the phone took my credit card details and said it was just for authoristation, however when I sent it back they started to try and take money out of my bank account so I cancelled my card so they couldnt get at my money.
I have come home tonight to a letter and in the heat of the moment I have rang them and ended up screaming at the rudest man I have ever spoke to as he said that he would send a bailiff out to my address. Can anyone tell me if they can do this or should I, like most people on here have done, just ignore them?

    Thanks

    Nina
  • ignore them tell them to sling there hook they bought the debt for peanuts and now try to collect if its over 6 years old all they can do is ask just do noe talk to them put the letters in recycling and forget it .
