i read all the other articles, and im so glad in that im not the only one who has been treated appalingly by this company. But, what im really concerned with is, do i have to pay back this ten year old debt now? some people say that after 6 years you dont, but then others are saying that because i made contact with them, ive reopened the debt? im confused.....

What I'm reading suggests that you only lift the statute barred status ('reopen the debt') by making payments, but I'm sure someone who knows more can clarify this.

Like I said, ring the National Debt Line. They will tell you that the debt is statute barred. As such, MH cannot take you to court for the money. This means there is very little they can do to get the money out of you (other than to trick you into thinking they can do something, which then leads to you making a payment - the result of which is that the debt stops being statute barred). This company is known for buying debts that are close to being or are statute barred. They pay very little for the debts, then try to get the money back by tricking people into thinking they have to pay. If 1 in every 10 people pays up, MH has made its money back - and more. MH has its own debt recovery company, too. Don't be surprised if you start getting mail or phone calls from them as well. It's all part of the trick to get you to make a payment. You can ignore them too. ;)

    Ring: 0808 808 4000.

Remember that if you make any payments, or agree in writing to make payments, then the debt will no longer be statute-barred.

If they got in touch about recent debts, and there is no way to avoid paying them, then he will have to agree a realistic monthly sum and make the payments. But if the debts are old and might be statute-barred, then do not reply in writing, do not pay ANYTHING and do not give them any information.

Note that if he agrees to make regular payments but then fails to make them then he will really be in trouble.
