The counts are observed by any candidate or agent who wishes to do so, as well as a number of independent officials. Prior to getting to the count the ballot boxes are securely sealed with uniquely coded tamper proof tags, and candidates can apply their own seals to the boxes if they wish.
It'd be pretty hard for someone to whip out a rubber and change the result, let alone manage to do it on enough ballot papers to actually make a difference. The pencil I used was a big blunt thing as well, so if you put the cross on firmly enough it's going to be evident that the results have been tampered with if anyone tried. All the ballot papers are retained for 1 year after the election in case they need to be examined or recounted.0 -
no , there was no police officerwe all have bad days , some more than others ..................0

There no police officer outside the station cos thats on of step toward a police state. A nice friendly police to make sure you make the right choice of candidates.0

Oh, you have to laugh sometimes. If you are going to rig a vote then there are much, much easier ways of doing it.
And I don't think there is anything stopping you from taking a pen with you if so wish. My biggest issue is that the string is never long enough for me as a left hander, I need to turn my paper on its side.
At the last election here there was a police officer, and he looked mightily bored. He said he'd rather be doing other things than sitting in a somewhat empty polling station for most of his day. Today there was no police officer.0 -
You'd be surprised how difficult those pencil marks are to erase. They'd certainly leave some residue if you tried.
Years ago there used to be a policeman for every polling station. However it was established through experience that his presence was totally unnecessary in most areas.
These days in rural areas one may pop in for a few minutes at some stage in the day. Still a waste of his time, generally0 -
I've never seen a policeman at any polling station I have voted at.
I had to ask for a new pencil as the one in the booth I was at had worn right down!Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0 -

Who counts the votes? Students?0 -
Totally secret voting of course...........they record your personal voting number aganst the number on the slips they give you. They record the number of the slips.
How the hell is this secret?
ie..number JC.0000 is so and so. Ballet paper was given to the person holding the reference JC.0000.
So they know exactly who voted for who.0
