I have sent you a link to a Toshiba OEM version of XP Pro. Download and save it to your Desktop.
  • Hi all,

I know I'm a little late to the party but have read back through the thread. So we are dealing with a super slow laptop that has unresponsive scripts, crashing processes/programs etc?

Just a thought have you tried starting it up in safe mode, seeing if it is any quicker or if you still get the same issues?

Then compare the processes that start up when you boot up normally.

Also remove unused tools that reside in the system tray and that load at start-up.

Doesn't sound like it's a virus to me just a rogue process sapping your CPU cycles!

Donnie have just replied to you. Thankfully the laptop's running alot quicker now :T

Not really sure how I remove unused tools that reside in the system tray and that load at start-up or maybe I've just done that by removing the previous things in HJT?

    Here's a new HJT

Still have jqs, sprtsvc, http://www.uku.co.uk/ homepage etc, MDM.EXE, seaport, ctfmon.

what are the commit figures after a clean boot, and how much faster is it to boot etc?

you may not need bonjour running at startup. http://developer.apple.com/networking/bonjour/faq.html ? http://download.gizmoproject.com/jasmine/TurnOffBonjour.exe

Try cleanmem (post 2 link), and backup with disk imaging software when you are happy everything is working.

Actually you don't have to do anything more, other than install Internet Explorer 8, stop the Bonjour Service and removing SeaPort, if you don't need it as I indicated earlier.

Download the XP Disc and drivers and ImgBurn on to a USB drive as instructed. Buy at least a couple of CDs and go along to a friend or Internet cafe with access to a CD writer. Let them know that you will need to burn an Image to Disc. Hopefully they'll have suitable software, such as Nero. If not, hopefully they will allow you to install ImgBurn. Follow the instructions to burn the .iso image to disc.

When completed, burn the drivers to the second disc as Data. Therein you will have recovery discs for your laptop for a pound or two.

Still got ctfmon too, see link in post 2, trim a little further, install cleanmem, and get this Peak 561528 below 500000, and it will run even quicker. It should boot up in less than 60-90 seconds.

IE8 comes with some bloaty addons, that can be disabled.

    See post 2 and 55.

you can disable seaport with hjt/autoruns or disable the service in services.msc
